MAWhatsApp just removed its biggest barrier.
You no longer need a WhatsApp account to chat on WhatsApp.
Meet Guest Chats — WhatsApp's new feature currently being tested with select beta users on Android, iOS and Web.
Here's how it works:
→ A WhatsApp user can start a chat with ANY non-WhatsApp user
→ The other person does NOT need to create an account
→ No download required
→ No phone number registration
→ Just a temporary guest session — chat begins instantly
What guest users can do:
→ Send and receive basic text messages
What they cannot do:
→ No photos or videos
→ No documents
→ No GIFs or stickers
→ No voice notes
→ No voice or video calls
→ Chats expire after ~10 days of inactivity
Why this is a massive strategic move for
WhatsApp:
Right now WhatsApp loses potential users at one specific moment — when someone says "I don't have WhatsApp, I use iMessage/Telegram/Signal."
Guest Chats eliminates that friction entirely.
You can now pull anyone — regardless of their messaging preference — into a WhatsApp conversation without asking them to commit to the platform.
Once they're in the chat, using it daily, experiencing the interface — the conversion to a full account becomes dramatically easier.
This is classic product-led growth strategy:
Remove the signup wall.
Let people experience value first.
Convert them later.
Meta knows exactly what it's doing.
