One of the most famous differences between the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and its film adaptation Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the moment when Albus Dumbledore confronts Harry Potter after Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet. In the novel by J. K. Rowling, Dumbledore approaches Harry and asks, “Did you put your name into the Goblet of Fire, Harry?” and the text explicitly states that he asked calmly. The line emphasizes Dumbledore’s usual composure and wisdom—he rarely loses control and already suspects that Harry is not responsible. In the film, however, the scene plays out very differently: the version of Dumbledore portrayed by Michael Gambon rushes toward Harry, grabs him, and angrily shouts the question. The change was largely a directorial interpretation by Mike Newell, likely intended to heighten the tension and urgency of the moment on screen, but many fans felt it contradicted the character’s calm nature from the books.
