I woke up today with every 10th to 12th beat as a PVC. Is it fun? No. But I’ve been living with palpitations for nearly 6 years now and I’ve had my heart checked (and even had a scope poking around in there for my ablation) so I know structurally, it’s fine. It’s like any engine: sometimes it’s going to sputter. Welcome to the pain cave ↓ Yesterday, I ran a 5k PR at 19min, which was absolutely brutal (if you know, you know 😅) Funny enough, when I was looking at the data in my Coros app, it turns out I spent 44% of my run in zone 6. Zone 6?? Aren’t there only 5 zones? Well… *insert different HR zone models which honestly all make running intensity interpretation quite confusing* Let me explain: Coros uses 6 HR zones, where zone 5 maxes out at your max HR, and everything in zone 6 is above max heart rate. Strava uses 5 zones, making your max HR the top of zone 4, with everything above that being zone 5 (which also creates a bigger zone 2 range). Garmin also uses 5 zones by default but allows customization: most people end up with zone 5 starting around 90% of max HR. Feel free to comment if you’d like me to compare these apps and how to actually approach HR zones properly. But here’s what “zone 6” really means: I was running above my previously recorded max heart rate. Sounds impossible? It’s not. Even though max HR decreases with age, you can actually increase your achieved max HR through training by unlocking better cardiovascular performance. This doesn’t mean you’re changing your genetic max HR, it just means that as fitness improves your heart becomes stronger and more efficient, allowing you to access your true cardiovascular ceiling. In my case, when I did my lactate testing last December, my max HR was 183. Later, during intense intervals, I hit 186 bpm. And now, during an all-out 5k PR, I hit 190bpm. The takeaway: your “max” isn’t actually fixed. If you train hard and push your limits, you might end up surprising yourself with what you can handle (and slightly increased zones, including zone 2, yay!) So that zone 6 pain?
