Holy Thursday commemorates the final night Jesus spent with His twelve apostles before His crucifixion. It took place in the Upper Room in Jerusalem, during the Jewish feast of Passover. During supper, Jesus rose from the table, tied a towel around his waist and washed each of His apostles’ feet. When Peter refused, Jesus answered: “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” He then told them: “I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” He then took bread, broke it and said: “Take and eat, this is my Body.” He took the cup of wine and said: “Drink from it, this is my Blood of the New Covenant.” This was the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the sacrament that Catholics and Orthodox Christians celebrate at every Mass to this day. Then Jesus was deeply troubled and said: “One of you will betray me.” He dipped a morsel of bread and handed it to Judas. After Judas took it, Satan entered him. Jesus said: “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Judas left at once. And it was night. Jesus then went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He sweated blood. He asked the Father to take the cup from Him, then said: “Not my will but yours.” Judas returned with soldiers and identified Jesus with a kiss. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday evening, with Sundays excluded because each Sunday celebrates the Resurrection. During Lent, the Church emphasizes the three pillars of prayer (deepening our relationship with God), fasting (detachment from worldly comforts to strengthen the soul), and almsgiving (charity and love toward others). Fasting is mandatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for Catholics ages 18–59 (one full meal and two smaller meals, no snacking), and abstinence from meat is mandatory on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent for Catholics age 14 and older.
