EMThis was such an easy setup… and the chickens love it!
My chickens have always preferred open water from buckets…but those get warm, stagnant, and full of algae so fast… especially in Florida. 🥵
I used a galvanized tub, some old pavers, river rock, and a small solar fountain from @poposoapsolar to keep the water moving.
Weather is already warming up… I needed something simple that would help keep their water fresher without needing electricity out by the barn.
And did you know??? Chickens can’t sweat, so they release heat through their combs and wattles. Keeping fresh, cool water available like this helps them stay hydrated and better handle the heat.
Maybe 10 minutes to put together… and they went straight to it.

MEEpisode 2: Homemade Butter
I TOTALLY failed the first 2 times trying and wasted a half gallon of cream 🥲 But people’s suggestions in comments and messages were a big help, and I figured it out by round 3!
If you’ve never made butter, I recommend using a stand mixer. You pour the cream in, set it to high, and watch the bowl until it starts splashing like crazy. That tells you the butter has separated from the buttermilk.
After the butter separates, it’s important you squeeze out all that buttermilk or your fresh butter can go bad pretty quickly on the counter!

_LI posted a version of this video a few months ago and while I got plenty of support it got a major amount of backlash.
I’m not entirely sure why some people are afraid to know how food becomes food.
This way of life gives you the deepest connection to your food.
These animals are raised with more care than anything you’d ever find wrapped on a styrofoam tray at the store.
The entire animal is used, nothing is wasted and it is processed with dignity and respect.
My kids don’t have their heads in the sand when it comes to the circle of life.
These are skills that not nearly enough people have and it’s our responsibility to make sure future generations can take care of themselves.
And for those asking - that’s a pig head Bailee is processing.
So, while this has been one of the most controversial posts I’ve ever made (according to the internet) this is probably the best one I’ve ever made because it’s opened some eyes.

BLResharing some garden inspiration from the blossom and branch homestead this morning in case you needed (another) project idea!
This year I finally removed the wood slice pathway after 4 years and replaced it with brick we had left over from our home renovation, but I’m still so happy with how much life we got out of it! I used elm for the path which is a softer wood; had I used a harder one it would have lasted longer, but it cost me nothing but the edging and sand so it was well worth it and I LOVE the look of it.
The lavender field is absolutely bursting this year, our “phenomenal” (yes that’s what the varietal is called, yes I know it’s a cheesy name) lavender is coming into its own in year four and the bumblebees are getting ready to swarm.
The wooden seed trays performed amazingly and produced huge and healthy seedlings to get the garden up and running and my wood beds have now outlasted my metal ones which look misshapen and are rusting on the inside. Shou sugi ban for the win!
