NAIn 1996, Linda Perry, best known as the lead vocalist of 4 Non Blondes, appeared on The Howard Stern Show where she performed an acoustic version of “What’s Up?”, the band’s 1993 breakthrough hit from the album Bigger, Better, Faster, More!. During the visit, Perry spoke with Stern about her departure from the band and her emerging solo career before picking up a guitar and performing the song live in the studio.
The stripped down performance highlighted Perry’s raw vocal style and the emotional intensity that made the song an alternative rock anthem of the early 1990s. Without the full band arrangement, the acoustic setting emphasized her powerful delivery of the famous chorus, including the line “I scream from the top of my lungs, what’s going on,” which helped the song become a defining track of that era’s rock scene.
