At 42, I was strength training, eating well, doing everything right, but I still couldn’t kick the fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, weight gain and the feeling like I was losing “me.” At 40, I had gone to my GP to ask for help and was sent out the door with an antidepressant and told I was fine, but as the years continued, I wasn’t fine, in fact, I was everything, but. At 42, I found a function provider who actually listened. I remember I sat in the chair in his office crying. I was so lost, so tired and so sad. He listened and then quietly said, “I think you’re in perimenopause.” I didn’t even know what perimenopause was at that time, but after doing labs to get a good baseline as to where my estrogen, testosterone and progesterone were, I started on HRT Here are 10 things no one tells you about HRT, but I will👇🏼 1. It took 2-3 months to get the right dose and for many it can take longer. In fact, a lot of my symptoms worsened before they got better. It took patience on my part to stick with it. 2. Tracking symptoms was critical. I tracked everything: sleeping, eating, when I had brain fog, my libido, when I felt bloated etc. I made sure to communicate with my doctor often about my symptoms 3. Testosterone was a hugefor me. It helped eliminate brain fog and it got my libido back. 4. HRT is not a weight loss tool. It did not help me lose belly fat, but it did optimize my hormones and that’s when I started using other micro protocols to help. 5. Even on HRT, I still had to protect my sleep. I set up nightly routines to help me wind down: taking a bath, no scrolling at night, magnesium. I try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day and night 6. I had to change how I worked out. No more cardio and less days at the gym. Walking has helped with inflammation 7. Supplements still matter. I take vit B,D, omega 3’s, creatine and more. Deficiencies make things harder 8. I went with bioidentical over synthetic. Everyone is different & everyone absorbs creams differently 9. HRT & exercise are non negotiable. I’d love to hear your experience with HRT and seek your guidance if you are willing to share your story🤍❤️🤍 My last period was at age 55 and the night sweats resulting in severe disturbed 🛌 led me to HRT and 5 very happy years of slumber and rested days😴 At age 60 on 2016 I was advised that HRT was no longer an option due to the thinking of that time. Fast forward to 2026 as I close in on 71 with sleep disturbances that are not sustainable AND my bones have not been protected by HRT for 10 years, resulting in spinal compression fractures which left me miserable for the last 18 months while I sought answers to the pain. I am currently on a 3 year regimen to build 🆙my bones and am starting to seek out professional and personal thoughts 💡 on adding HRT to the mix. I did everything right on HRT and still gained 12 pounds. Here’s what most women get wrong and what I finally figured out. Everyone talks about the dose. Nobody talks about what your body has to do with the estrogen after it arrives. Your liver and your gut are your two estrogen clearance organs. Both of them have to be working properly for HRT to do what it’s supposed to do. Most women start HRT without addressing either one. I was one of them. Here’s what was happening in my body. My liver was overburdened. Stressed, inflamed, running on empty. When my liver can’t clear estrogen fast enough, it recirculates. It doesn’t just disappear. It stores in fat tissue. Belly. Hips. Thighs. That is estrogen dominance. On HRT. With perfect levels on paper. And then there’s the gut, the piece almost nobody talks about. When your gut microbiome is disrupted it produces an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. That enzyme reactivates estrogen that your liver already cleared and sends it back into circulation. So I was taking HRT, my liver was working to clear it and my gut was putting it right back in. I was stuck in a loop. And the scale kept going up. Once I addressed both, the weight started moving. Prioritizing daily bowel movements so cleared estrogen had a way out. Rebuilding my gut microbiome so it stopped reabsorbing what my liver worked to clear. Same HRT. Same dose. Completely different result. The medication was never the problem. The foundation underneath it was. If you are on HRT and still waiting, this is the conversation you have not had yet. Once you work on the RIGHT things, the weight and inflammation will drop. You just can’t skip steps.
