Huni Kuin Hampaya Ritual 🦜 Hampaya comes from a mixture of very spicy Amazonian peppers. The mixture is applied on the tip of the tongue with the feather or the beak of the Japinî, a type of a bird that imitates other birds and animals, considered sacred for the indigenous tribes of the Amazon. In the kaxinawà native language of the Huni Kuin, the word for the Japinî bird is “Txana”, which is also how they refer to traditional singers, the spiritual warriors who heal their communities with their songs and dedication to their voice. They use Hampaya in this context, to open the vocal cords and the throat region. A partir dos anos 2000, quando se tornou líder espiritual, foi um dos primeiros representantes de seu povo a inserir o violão nas músicas tradicionais, como uma forma de ajudar os jovens a se reconectarem com a cultura e a viverem a transformação da tradição. Seu novo trabalho musical traz 5 faixas: Santa Luz Divina, e 4 cantos tradicionais com versões compostas por ele - Nai Bai Sitime, Nai Mawa Yuxini, Dautibuya e Yama Kawanei. Essa versão de Eskawatã Kayawei foi registrada no @reunion.experience, em um dia que choveu na época de seca da Costa Rica, após 7 anos de estiagem durante o período. Esse é o Pai da Mata, não só um grande artista, mas um Pajé Huni Kuin, que conversa e chama as forças da natureza para trazer paz e equilíbrio para todos nós. Só alegria! * Ninawa Pai da Mata has already composed several melodies for the traditional Huni Kuin chants. From the 2000s onwards, when he became a spiritual leader, he was one of the first representatives of his people to include the guitar in traditional songs, as a way of helping the youth to reconnect with their culture and experience the transformation of their tradition. His new musical work features 5 tracks: Santa Luz Divina, and 4 traditional songs with versions composed by him - Nai Bai Sitime, Nai Mawa Yuxini, Dautibuya, and Yama Kawanei. This version of Eskawatã Kayawei was recorded at @reunion.experience, on a day that rained during the dry season in Costa Rica, after 7 years of drought during the period. The Huni Kuin tribe has a powerful and unique ritual called HAMPAYA or pepper baptism. 🐦🪶✨ One of the purpose of this ceremony is to open one’s voice and enhance memory for learning to sing and communicate through your voice. But it is not only about developing vocal abilities but also about honoring the natural world and connecting with its powerful spirit. To perform the ritual, a person who is a skilled singer applies pepper to the learners’ tongues using the beak of the Txana bird. The Txana bird is known for its ability to imitate the songs of various birds and forest animals, which is why the Huni Kuin singers receive the same name, Txana. During the application, the person recites a prayer calling upon the strength of several bird singers and asking for blessings from Txana. Once the ritual is complete, the person “becomes a bird” and is accompanied by a small tana spirit, who will bring them knowledge and understanding as they grow. In order to nourish this new aspect of their being, it is essential to follow a specific diet, natural, light and low sugar. After that ceremony is recommended “to eat like a bird” which means: small portions! It was a beautiful and powerful activation. Gratitude Huni Kuins ✨🤍 I honor all of you! Hampaya — le baptême du piment 🌶️ C’est la deuxième fois que je reçois cette médecine… et ça a été un vrai game changer pour moi. Je rêvais de la rencontrer à nouveau pour améliorer mes chants, mon anglais, mon portugais, et surtout pour porter ma voix au service des hommes qui sont prêts à travailler avec moi. Cette médecine, pratiquée par le peuple Huni Kuin, est celle qui ouvre la voix/voie du Txana. Un Txana, c’est un chanteur, un artiste, un leader, le gardien des chants sacrés. C’est un homme (ou une femme) qui tient l’espace, qui canalise, qui porte la parole de sa tribu avec une parole impeccable. Mais c’est aussi un oiseau — celui que vous voyez dans la vidéo — un oiseau au pouvoir unique : il imite le chant de tous les oiseaux de la forêt, avec une ouïe incroyablement fine, pour transmettre les messages importants aux siens. Dans le rituel, la femme-médecine (pajé) applique un piment extrêmement fort environ 60 fois sur la langue du receveur. Ce feu ouvre le chemin intérieur. Il brûle symboliquement les blocages liés à la communication, la peur de s’exprimer, les voiles qui empêchent la voix d’être claire, juste, alignée. Cette médecine purifie. Elle ouvre la voie pour chanter avec le cœur. Elle soutient aussi l’apprentissage, la mémoire, l’étude — que ce soit les chants, une langue étrangère, un nouveau projet, ou une pratique artistique ou pour ouvrir l’apprentissage spirituel. Après ce nettoyage intense de 10–15 minutes, le nouveau Txana se lève et chante devant la chamane, pour déposer sa voix et sceller le lien avec les esprits de la forêt. C’est un moment fort, humble, authentique. Un rite de passage pour devenir canal, messager et gardien du son.
