Why does it look like that?! You may notice your milk separates, has different consistencies, and varies in color when stored in the fridge. This is caused by fat separation because breastmilk isn’t homogenized like store-bought milk. Homogenization breaks down the fat so it’s evenly distributed and smooth. In breastmilk, the creamy layer on top is the fat. When it sits, the fat naturally rises and the more watery portion settles below. It’s normal, expected, and absolutely safe to feed your baby. Before feeding to baby: • Swirl or gently shake to recombine (shaking won’t hurt the milk, but bubbles can formed if shaken hard) • If needed, warm slightly to get the fat off the sides of container (this is good stuff! don’t leave it behind!) •If storing in a breastmilk bag, you can knead it to combine before opening Sometimes previously frozen milk will appear chunky when defrosted. Again, caused by fat separation and not spoilage. If you’re following safe breastmilk storage guidelines, rest assured that your milk is safe & perfect for your baby! 🥰 #breastmilk #breastmilkstorage #breastfeeding #lactationconsultant #ibclc

Watch me do a tongue tie assessment on this newborn baby Many mums tell me their baby has been checked for tongue tie. But when they say ‘check’ I ask: did the healthcare provider do what I just showed you? The answer is usually ‘no’. No wander so many tongue ties are diagnosed without any basis and so many are missed. Unless the baby was assessed like in this video, with a full functional and anatomical examination as well as feeding assessment (breast or bottle, sometimes both), it is impossible to diagnose or exclude tongue tie. #drsilbersteinclinic #breastfeedingdoctoruk #ibclc #lactationconsultant #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeeding #tonguetie #breastfeedingmedicine #breastfeedingdoctor #breastfeedingtips #tonguetied #tonguetie #tonguetiebabies #tonguetiespecialist #tonguetiedivision #ankyloglossia

While this is a ‘get ready with me’ post - it doesn’t really matter what I do personally. ✨Before I explain why, FOLLOW @cocoonandcradle for more breastfeeding & sleep tips✨ What matters is that all mums know how to cosleep safely. Because we know the there is a huge percentage of mums, who even if they never planned on cosleeping, do so at some point. And when that happens, I don’t want those exhausted mums to unknowingly fall asleep with avoidable risk factors. For example, I have heard from so many mums that fell asleep feeding on a couch or sofa because they were so afraid of falling asleep in bed. However, we know that cosleeping on a recliner / couch / sofa is a huge risk factor and far more dangerous than falling asleep in a thoughtfully created and risk mitigated cosleeping environment. What I also know, is that fear mongering is not the answer. For those of you who are about to comment (hi there!) with statements like “you should never cosleep” etc. This doesn’t help. Blanket statements like this don’t stop mums from cosleeping (FYI it’s been happening since the dawn of time). They just make mums fearful to seek the support and education, so that they can make truly informed decisions when it comes to their little one’s sleep. And I’m not saying that all mums cosleep or even should cosleep. Everyone is different and what works for one family won’t work for another family. But for those mums who cosleep out of personal choice or pure exhaustion, I want them to be informed so that they can sleep as safely as possible. These recommendations in the reel come from world renowned cosleeping expert Dr James McKenna - and if you’d like to learn more I’d highly recommend his book Safe Infant Sleep. What are your thoughts? Let me know ⬇️ 🧡 #ibclc #lactationconsultant #breastfeedingmum #cosleeping

Se il bambino non mangia i solidi ha senso “togliergli il seno?” Quante volte mi viene posta questa domanda. In continuazione. This is to help you feel “normal” when it comes to how frequently a one month old may feed. If you choose to do scheduled feeds, that is totally okay! I just prefer to “go with the flow,” and I feel like since this is my baby, I truly just want to soak in newborn snuggles and nursing sessions. Just because your baby is wanting to nurse frequently doesn’t necessarily mean there is a “problem” or that you have a low milk supply. Of course, always get guidance from an IBCLC and your pediatrician if you are concerned about less-than-optimal milk intake. Key points: • Babies’ appetites fluctuate throughout the day, just like ours do. As our appetite changes, we take in varied amounts of food to sustain our energy. The same is true for babies—they may not want to eat the same amount at every feeding because their appetite fluctuates. • Some feeds they may take more, and some feeds they may take less. • Babies have tiny stomachs requiring frequent feeds—try to avoid “holding them off.” • When in doubt, offer a milk feed. • Babies may want to nurse just for comfort—this is normal and expected. • It is also unrealistic to expect our child to only need to eat at set times. Try to provide flexibility and avoid pushing out feedings when your baby is obviously hungry—we want to ensure they are learning to trust their hunger cues. Responsive feeding is encouraged by the AAP to help support intuitive eating from the start. ➡️ Comment “#baby” if you are nearing the age of starting solids and want our full AAP published guide on optimizing nutrition + encouraging intuitive eating from the start.

Reverse “guppy pose” on a yoga ball is a great way to help the colicky, tense, gassy baby latch better, with less “chomping “ making breastfeeding less painful for both mom and baby. Especially helpful for tied babies. The yoga ball allows for more flexibility, and the babies LOVE this move!! Give it a try and let me know in the comments how it helped!! #breastfeeding #newmom #colic #ibclc #torticollis

Became a lactation consultant and found out what was actually happening… and I’ve never shut up about it since. 😂 And honestly? Good. Because I wish someone had told me: Latch pain is not something you just push through. It’s a sign something is off.... and it’s fixable. Cluster feeding does not mean your supply is dropping. It means you have a baby. A small pump output does not mean your body is failing you. I went home from the hospital not knowing any of this. No one showed me how to fix the latch. No one told me the pain wasn’t normal. No one explained what breastfeeding was actually supposed to look like. And I was a registered nurse. So if you’ve been sitting in the dark Googling everything at 2AM convinced something is wrong with you… It’s not you, mama. It was never you. That’s what I’m here for. Sometimes a better latch starts before baby reaches the breast. If your baby is struggling to achieve a deep latch, a brief period of gentle head extension can help organize the muscles used for feeding. This position allows the baby to: • open the mouth more widely • bring the tongue forward • reduce tension in the floor of the mouth and chest • achieve better alignment for feeding Think of it as helping baby find the same head position they naturally use during breastfeeding This involves getting the chin up, airway open, and mouth ready to gape. A few important tips: • Move slowly and gently • Support baby’s head and trunk the entire time • Never force the extension — let baby guide the range • A little gentle rocking can help babies regulate and relax Once baby is calm and organized, bring them to the breast while maintaining that chin-up, head-extended position to support a deeper latch. Sometimes a few seconds of preparation can make the whole feeding feel easier 🩶. #breastfeeding #newborn #infantfeeding #ibclc #newbornfeeding

This is called an O-ball, and it's a great tool for building bottle skills 🍼 It's wonderful for a baby who is 3-4 months old and already grabbing toys and bringing them to their mouth. Here's how it works: you thread a bottle nipple through one of the smaller holes on the O-ball. The baby can hold the ball, bring it to their mouth, and practice sucking on the nipple without needing to take a full feeding. While they play with the ball, they're learning the mechanics of bottle feeding without all the pressure. And don't worry: sucking on an empty nipple does not make your baby gassy! You might hear the sound of air moving through the nipple hole, but they are not swallowing that air. It's just the sound of suction. This is one of the strategies I use when we're working on bottle refusal with breastfed babies. It helps them build comfort and competence with the bottle without the stress of feeding time. Have you tried the O-ball? Let me know in the comments. #ibclc #bottleskills #bottlerefusal #lactationproblems #lactationsupport
