It’s easy to confuse medical diagnosis criteria with IDEA law, or to think that one is = to the other. But they aren’t the same. IDEA requires BOTH: The child meets one of the 13 categories of eligibility & The disability impacts learning or access to education. A medical diagnosis can inform the team, but it doesn’t replace the legal standard. My IEP Eligibility Guide breaks it down clearly for both educators and parents & it’s available at Adjurcation.com! Comment diagnosis and I’ll send you the link! You can do it- I’ll show you how. 🫶#specialed #iep #specialeducation #iepmeeting #parentadvocate

Suspect your child has a learning difference, but not sure how to approach your school? That first conversation with administrators can be intimidating, but it's crucial for getting your child the support they need. Individualized Education Programs, or IEPs, are the tool you and your school will use to support your kid. This script walks you through exactly what to say to get the IEP process moving effectively. Using the right language and knowing what to ask for can make all the difference in securing proper evaluation and services. Let's navigate this important step together — remember, you’re your child's best advocate! 💪 Some helpful terms and info: 🗣️ "Suspect a disability": Your child does not need a diagnosis to be evaluated for an IEP. Using this phrase triggers legal protections, and schools must respond with an evaluation. Vague concerns might be addressed through other means that delay proper evaluation. 🤝 Referral meeting: This is the first step, a meeting with the school in which the district determines whether a special education evaluation is needed. 🤝 Special education evaluation: A meeting to determine whether a child needs special education services. May include a variety of assessments, including observations, interviews, checklists, record reviews, and formal/informal tests. If the child is determined to be eligible for special education services, this eval helps shape what to include in the IEP. 📝 IEP is a legally documented plan, created by parents and educators, outlining special education and related services for students with disabilities to support their learning and development. Come to these meetings with notes or documentation on the specific struggles and issues you’ve seen with your child and their schoolwork so you can share your concerns. And always follow up this conversation in writing (letter or email)! The school has deadlines for responding, and the date they receive the initial request in writing starts the clock. ⏰ #ParentsTogether #ScriptsForParents #SpecialEducation #LearningDifferences #AdvocatingForYourChild #SpecialNeeds #EducationRights #IEP #NeurodivergentKids #SpecialNeedsDad #SpecialNeedsMom

“The science wasn’t settled. It never was.” For years, inclusion has often been treated as “best practice” in special education. General education classroom. Least restrictive environment. Push-in support over pull-out. But a recent review of the research behind inclusion raised an important concern: Some of the studies used to support these decisions compared students who weren’t actually comparable— and used that to draw conclusions about placement. Which means something important: We’ve had strong opinions about where students should be taught… without equally strong evidence that placement alone is what drives outcomes. Research referenced: Fuchs, Gilmour, & Wanzek (2025), Journal of Learning Disabilities. #InclusiveClassroom #iteach #educators #iep

Most parents walk into #IEP (or individualized education program) meetings without knowing their rights and I see the consequences of that every day. In this video, I’m breaking down the non-negotiables I want every family to understand: ✔️ Your child’s right to a full evaluation ✔️ Why you’re an equal member of the team ✔️ When and how to request outside evaluations ✔️ What “Least Restrictive Environment” actually means Schools won’t always explain this — but I will. #specialeducation #inclusion #neurodiverse #autismawareness

The parents of then three-year-old Tarrell, who is non-verbal and has autism, demand answers after he was left in the school band room twice, instead of being escorted onto the bus, as required by his IEP. “It was just scary… We didn’t know where he was.” CPS says student safety is its highest priority and promises a full investigation and stronger policies and procedures. @cbschicago #CPS #SpecialEducation #IEP https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/video/parents-pull-son-with-autism-from-cps-school-after-safety-concerns/
