It’s usually not explained to parents the reason an IEP really exists. An IEP is not created simply because a child needs extra help. It is not created just to give accommodations like extra time, breaks, or small group testing. And it is also not created just to put the child in a different placement because of behavior. A child qualifies for an IEP because they require specially designed instruction. That means the school must change the way instruction is delivered so the child can learn and make meaningful progress. But have you ever noticed that especially designed instruction is rarely discussed or explained during an IEP meeting? Accommodations are discussed at length, but not specially designed instruction. And when specially, design instruction is missing, meaningful progress usually doesn’t happen. Not because the child can’t learn, but because the instruction was never truly designed for them. So here’s the most important question every parent should know to ask: What special designed instruction is my child receiving and how is it different from what is provided to every other students in the class? If that question can’t be answered clearly, it’s time for a deeper conversation. #IEP #specialeducation #parentadvocate

I used to believe that once my child got into public school, everything would fall into place. That there would be support. That someone would step in and help him. That this was what my taxes paid for. And I’ll be honest—I didn’t even know what an IEP was. I literally thought it was a person…like an aide who would follow him around and make sure he was okay. Because that’s what I had seen growing up with kids who had more obvious disabilities. What I didn’t understand was this: 👉 An IEP is a legal document 👉 Support is not automatic 👉 And nothing happens unless you know your rights and advocate for them I went into the system blindly. And I was wrong about a lot. I didn’t understand what I was entitled to… But I also didn’t understand what I wasn’t. And that gap? That’s where a lot of kids fall through the cracks. Now—I do believe public school can be an incredible option for autistic kids because of protections like IDEA and FAPE. But those protections only matter if you actually understand how to use them. Public school is not a rescue plan. It’s a system you have to learn how to navigate. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, confused, or like you thought school would “fix” things… You’re not alone—and you’re not crazy. That’s exactly why I created the IEP Toolkit.
