AIAt IIM Lucknow, there used to be one unique subject where students were supposed to show up at exactly 20:59:59 (this goes for most classes tho) or the doors would shut without a second thought.
No slides. No lectures. No case studies.
A boardgame that ran till 4 AM.
This was Business on Board, taken by @the_mkt_school Prof. Mrityunjay Tiwari, CFA, FRM, Ph.D, Associate Professor at IIM Lucknow. A man who looked at the entire MBA curriculum and decided case studies weren’t enough.
So he spent 5 years building something from scratch.
Thousands of trial hours. Sleepless nights. Countless iterations. His wife sat in as a volunteer. Students ran trials that went 10 hours straight.
The result became the first ever course in an MBA curriculum to teach business entirely through boardgames. IIM Lucknow became the first business school in the world to offer something like this. It went on to be a finalist at the QS Wharton Reimagine Education Awards 2021.
And now he’s going for a patent on the game itself.
Just a boardgame that somehow made us understand negotiation, valuation, strategy, and team dynamics better than anything I’d studied before.
But none of that prepares you for actually sitting across the table at midnight, making real decisions under pressure, watching your strategies fall apart and rebuilding them in real time.
It hits different when the “classroom” is a game, the stakes feel real, and your professor is still going strong at 3 AM.
That night ran till 4 AM. Nobody left. Nobody wanted to.
IIM Lucknow gave me a lot.
This class gave me something I didn’t expect the ability to think when it matters.
