Meme history and origin, "I Like Turtles" is a phrase first uttered by ten-year-old Jonathan Ware during a local news interview at the Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon. Following its broadcast and the subsequent upload to YouTube in late May 2007, Jonathan's curt response to the reporter's lackluster question went viral, inspiring a video remixes, memorabilia and further memes referencing the video over the following years. In July 2023, Ware participated in an advertisement for the animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, where he recreated the original meme as an adult. On May 31st, 2007, ten-year-old Jonathan Ware was visiting the Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon. During his visit to the fair, Jonathan had his face paintec to look like a Zombie and was approached by the KGW local news correspondent Nancy Francis. When asked to comment about his face paint on camera, Jonathan tersely responded "I like turtles." A copy of the KGW newscast was uploaded by YouTuber[1] CaptJax458 on June 11th, 2007, garnering over 72 million views in 16 years (shown below). Nancy Francis: "Back here live at the cy Francis: "B Waterfront Village with my friend the zombie, Jonathon. You're looking good, Jonathon. Jonathon just got an awesome face paint job. The “I like turtles” meme originates from a 2007 news clip featuring a young boy named Jonathan Ware at a local fair. When asked by a reporter about his face paint (a zombie design), he unexpectedly responds with a deadpan expression, “I like turtles.” The randomness and delivery of his response made the clip go viral, sparking countless memes, remixes, and parodies over the years. This moment has become an internet classic, often used to highlight absurdity, randomness, or to humorously change the topic of a conversation. #meme #memes #viral #reels #comedy #explore #explorepage #exploremore #comedy #instagramgrowth #igreach #instagramhacks #fun #funny Backup: @bringbackclassicmemes

There is both intrinsic and instrumental value to turtles. It is both moral and pragmatic to appreciate and protect this incredibly unique group of animals. The Testudines and their ancestors are a group older than the dinosaurs. From the earliest stem turtles, to their ~488 modern taxa, and the thousands of intermediates come and gone, the turtles have remained both a shocking conglomeration of unique adaptations and very unchanged. They’ve mastered land and sea, oxygen-rich and anoxic environments, life in a shell, and how to persist. Their way of life has captivated us, evidenced by their prominent place in our collective human culture. They are a unique group, deserved of a seat at the table of existence, simply in that they exist and inspire. If the former argument is not enough, which I believe to be the case for many people, probably for good reason in many cases, it is useful to note that when evolutionary biology is wedded with the incentive to conserve, a good deal of directly “selfish” reasons to promote turtle conservation - and conservation broadly - arise. To start, the turtles are more similar to us as humans than you might think. We generally live to comparable ages and reach maturity around the same time. Considering these similarities in life history with the fact that many solutions in human medicine simply require looking to nature, it stands to reason the turtles can teach us a lot about ourselves, directly in some cases, indirectly in others. By deciphering the genetic code of the turtles, and pontificating on how natural selection has shaped it, breakthroughs in cancer, diabetes, aging, reperfusion injury, epigenetics, genomic landscape, human evolution, etc. research lie within reach. By looking under the turtle’s hood, we can save numerous lives, and enrich many others. On this #WorldTurtleDay please take a moment to reflect on what turtles mean to you, and if you’re inclined, take a step to protect this most threatened group of vertebrates. Do it for them, yourself, your family, or your friends. We all have a stake in life because we’re living, and can learn from each other. 📸 - Hatchling Narrow-bridged Musk Turtles @bfreebz

Meme history: „I Like Turtles“ originated from ten-year-old Jonathan Ware’s response to a reporter’s question during the Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon, in May 2007. When asked about his face paint, Jonathan simply replied, „I like turtles.“ The interview clip, uploaded to YouTube by CaptJax458 on June 11th, 2007, quickly went viral, accumulating over 72 million views in 16 years. In June 2007, the video sparked numerous parodies and mashups on YouTube. The phrase also appeared on t-shirts sold on various e-commerce platforms. Despite Jonathan and his family initially being unaware of his internet fame, they discovered it on Myspace in July. By August, KGW reunited with the Ware family for a follow-up interview. On November 3rd, 2007, „I like turtles“ was added to Urban Dictionary, defining it as a response to a dull question or an expression of genuine love for turtles. Jonathan’s legacy persisted, with Urlesque featuring the video in its „The 100 Most Iconic Internet Videos“ series in April 2009. In September 2010, Jonathan appeared on Tosh.0 for a „web redemption,“ explaining his love for turtles stemmed from seeing a turtle exhibit before the interview. In July 2023, Jonathan participated in an advertisement for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, where he recreated the iconic meme as an adult. #meme #meme #viral #fyp #iliketurtles #nostagia #2007 #17years #interview
