The Department of Empowerment of PwDs (Divyang Empowerment), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GOI, saw the potential of TEACH’s English Development Program (EDP) to transform the lives of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) youth. With this belief, Indian Sign Language Research And Training Centre (ISLRTC) has joined hands with TEACH to launch a 6-month journey for 70 ISLRTC students equipping them through structured training, curriculum, pedagogy and specific designed study material to strengthen English proficiency.

INFor decades, India’s deaf community used fragmented gestures, with no unified lexicon. Teachers borrowed from American or British Sign Language, leaving users isolated and misunderstood. In 2005, the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) was set up, tasked with creating a national dictionary. After years of documentation, the first edition came in 2018 — 3,000 signs across categories like academic, legal, medical, technical. In 2021, it expanded to 10,000 terms, available in print and digital video. For millions of ISL users, it was structure, visibility, and dignity. Suddenly, classrooms, courts, and workplaces could share a common visual language. Activists called it “a constitution of the hands.” India’s deaf culture, once sidelined, gained its own grammar. The dictionary proved that inclusion begins not with sound, but with recognition. We post India specific stories daily.
