May is water safety awareness month. Drowning is quick and silent and it’s the leading cause of death for children 1-4. It happens mostly during “non-swim” times when children aren’t supposed to be near the water. Here are some things you can do to prepare. 1. Supervision - designate a water watcher 2. Barriers, gates, locks, alarms 3. No puddle jumpers, they put children in the drowning position. But always use coast guard approved life jackets on open water, boats etc. 4. Learn CPR 5. Enroll in swim survival classes 6. If your children are unskilled, hold them in the water or opt for a sprinkler or splash pad instead. Stay safe sweet friends 🤍🫶🏼 I also have to say - we started Mav in swim survival at 8 months. There were tears but he learned and now he’s under water being silly, flipping all around and doing 67, begging to swim every chance he gets. Hang in there if you are in classes currently. It’s a gift for them. 💙 #ISR #drowningprevention #watersafety

SAVE AND SHARE THIS to spread awareness about ISR and water safety Last year my daughter passed her ISR float test. As a pediatrician and water safety advocate—I was so impressed. Thank you @isr_broward for all your work with her.   There were definitely tears at the beginning (which is so normal), but now? She’s floating, confident, and loving the water. Watching her transformation was incredible.   For those unfamiliar, ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) is a survival-based swim program designed to teach babies and young children how to float and breathe if they ever fall into water. Lessons are short-just 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week-for 4–12 weeks to start with more as needed.   With my son, we started traditional swim at 14 months, tried ISR, but had to stop due to weather and a long commute. But living in Florida with plenty of access to pools and the beach, we decided to give it another go with my daughter. And after seeing Vera go through ISR successfully, I truly believe it’s an amazing tool-especially if you live near water and have access to it.   To clear up the confusion about what ISR is really about, I’m re-releasing my episode with Erika from @seastarisr on this week’s episode of The Follow-Up. I shared our ISR (infant self rescue) journey on my story the other day, and there were so many questions that I thought a permanent post was needed. Because this is life saving information.🙏🏼 I’ve shared this journey with all three of our kids now. And I wanted to share what I’ve learned, in case you’re thinking about starting your own. Here’s what I’ve learned: → Finding the right instructor matters more than anything. Someone who teaches the skills, but is also deeply attuned to your child and listens to their cues and body language. → We started each of our kids around six months old. We came back for refresher lessons every 3 to 6 months, though each kiddo was a little bit different. Our little girl was a little late to the game on her refresher. → All three cried for the first six weeks. (10 min lessons) Every child had their own timeline, but eventually the tears turned into them crying because they didn’t want to leave the pool. → You’re right there cheering them on, supporting them the entire lesson I know ISR isn’t for every family, and that’s okay. You know your child best. There is other survival swim lessons out there. But for us, it’s been one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever done. Because none of us ever think it’s going to happen to our family. I just refuse to fight statistics when there’s something I can do about it. Knowing my kids have the tools to save themselves if the unimaginable ever happens? I can’t put a price on that. My boys are now very strong swimmers, and our little girl will get there too. Crying & watching this over & over again! 😭💖 As a lot of you know & have been around for our Swim Series, Mila (my oldest daughter) graduated ISR program right after her 1st birthday! So I was EXTREMELY hesitant about starting Ava at a young 7 months old, but now I am SO GLAD WE DID IT because look at this little rockstar water baby now! 🥹 As it is true that floating is babies natural instinct, I actually noticed Ava adapting & learning faster. It was so incredible to witness! This hits home as being from Florida, I have seen it ALL. I’m sure we all know one person who can’t swim or have had a pool scare. I still remember to this day jumping into a pool during my childhood while no one was watching, sinking to the pool floor & almost drowning! So for those of you who are new & wondering why we don’t wait until later: In the US, approximately 4,000 to 4,500 people die from accidental drowning each year & that translates to about 11 drowning deaths per day❗️ Drowning is also a leading cause of death for children ages 4 & UNDER❗️ ISR is not just regular swim lessons & having fun in the water, it’s strictly business & teaches survival swim instruction. And it can be LIFE-SAVING ❗️ So if you’re in Austin, GO FOLLOW @isr_austin & if you aren’t, I HIGHLY recommend checking out an ISR swim program in your area!
