In curling, the sweeping in front of the stone is not meant to clean the ice like a broom on a floor. Its real purpose is to change the friction between the stone and the ice, which directly affects how far the stone travels and how much it curves. The ice used in curling is not perfectly smooth. Before the game, tiny droplets of water are sprayed on the surface and frozen, creating a slightly bumpy surface called “pebbled ice.” The heavy granite stone actually slides on the tops of these tiny bumps. Because of friction between the stone and these bumps, the stone gradually slows down and begins to curve, a motion called curl. When players sweep the ice quickly with their brushes, the friction between the brush and the ice produces a small amount of heat. This heat slightly melts the tops of those tiny ice bumps and creates a microscopic film of water. That thin layer of water acts like a lubricant, making the surface temporarily smoother and reducing friction between the stone and the ice. Because friction is reduced, two important things happen. First, the stone can slide farther before stopping. Second, the stone curls less, meaning its path becomes straighter instead of bending strongly to one side. Teams use this effect strategically. If the stone is slowing down too early, players sweep hard, so it travels farther. If the stone is starting to curve too much, sweeping helps straighten its path. In simple terms, sweeping slightly melts the ice to make the surface smoother for a moment, allowing players to control the distance and direction of the stone even after it has been released. 📹- @nick_ruohonen (Posted with permission)
