You canโt speak without knowing the LETTERS and WORDS that make a SENTENCE that makes sense ๐
In the same way, you canโt play a SOLO without knowing the HARMONY youโre playing over.
Thatโs why the first steps are always to practice root notes, arpeggios and SCALES ๐ถ
and challenge yourself to try DIFFERENT ARPEGGIOS (not just 1-3-5-7 but also in reverse, or starting from the 3 or the 7)
The goal is to see ๐ a chord and INSTANTLY know exactly which notes it contains and which scale will work over it.
These are the first and most BASIC steps๐ช
After that comes the๐ก fun/creativity part:
Creating melodies (phrases) using the arpeggios and scales (your letters and words)
โ
And yes - thereโs nothing wrong with starting with SOMEONE ELSE'S phrases and licks, and learning the basics from them.
Modeling (transcriptions) is the best way I know, to learn.
IMITATING the sound you want is step one.
After that, your own creativity starts to flow and things begin to click..
