DRLearning Difficulty (aka Specific Learning Disorder, SLD) and Learning Disability (aka Intellectual Developmental Disorder, IDD) are distinct conditions that differ significantly in their characteristics and impact on individuals.
Learning difficulty refers to difficulties in specific academic areas such as reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), or maths (dyscalculia). Individuals with learning difficulties typically have average or above-average intelligence but struggle with particular academic skills, performing significantly below what is expected for their age. The disorder is identified when academic performance in reading, writing, or maths is substantially below the level expected based on the individual’s age, intelligence, and educational background. It primarily affects academic performance, leading to frustration and lower self-esteem, but it does not impact overall cognitive functioning.
In contrast, Learning Disability, also known as intellectual disability, involves significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Individuals with Learning Disability have an IQ significantly below average, typically below 70-75, and face difficulties in adaptive behaviors, which affect their ability to live independently and function socially. Learning Disability is diagnosed based on both intellectual assessment and observation of adaptive functioning, typically evident before the age of 18. The disorder affects all areas of cognitive and adaptive functioning, sometimes requiring extensive and lifelong support in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and daily living skills.

NEIntellectual disabilities impact a person's ability to learn and function in daily life.
While the term "intellectual disability" covers a wide range of conditions, there are four main categories used to classify the severity.
1️⃣ A person with a mild intellectual disability typically has an IQ between 50 and 70. They can generally care for themselves, hold a job, and participate in the community with some assistance or guidance.
2️⃣ Moderate intellectual disability is characterized by an IQ range of 35-49. Independent living is unlikely, but the person can learn basic life skills and self-care with significant support.
3️⃣ Severe intellectual disability is characterized by an IQ range of 20-34. Considerable assistance is needed for self-care and daily living.
4️⃣ Profound intellectual disability is the most severe category, with an IQ below 20. The person depends completely on others for basic care and requires constant supervision.

Found this little gem in Kobe the other day nestled between mountains, high rises, overhead trains, bypasses and interesting nets in the background belonging to a golf course!
This space is open 24 hours a day and accessible to all. There were lots of people from different backgrounds using this oasis to play sport.

People with intellectual disability experience unconscious bias in the health system and have much worse health outcomes than the rest of the population, dying 27 years earlier and having double the preventable death rate.
