because children label each other regardless of wether it is with a diagnosis or not 🫶 autism is an INVISIBLE disability that goes undiagnosed for many kids (especially girls) and many grow up not knowing this about themselves until adulthood, if at all. i’m so grateful to be living during this time period and getting to have the opportunity to discover things like this about myself and also having the courage to start helping raise awareness about it. my heart breaks for the undiagnosed people of the past who likely spent their whole lives not knowing why they felt so different 💔 #autismawareness #latediagnosed #autisminwomen

The Anti-Ableism Series Part 241 Featuring @russl.co If you want to help a disabled person, make sure you know or ask HOW you can help. Video description/transcript: Tiffany and Russell in the frame. Then it zooms in on Russell. Tiffany: Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people? Russell: Hi I’m Russell Lehmann. I’m a motivational speaker, poet and advocate. I happen to have autism and OCD and other dual diagnoses that are all invisible. And when you try to help me, please be sure that you know how to help me. Because when you try to help somebody with an invisible disability, even if it’s very well intentioned, if you don’t know how to help them, it can actually cause a lot of hurt. And therefore if you are unsure how to help somebody, you can lean back and passively support. Supporting for me is vital. I don’t really need a lot of help. There’s nothing that needs to be fixed. But when I’m struggling, when I have my meltdown, when I have my intrusive thoughts and I can’t leave the house, I just need to feel that I’m supported. But if you suggest something to try to help me, and I know that it doesn’t work for me, now I’m in an awkward position between doing that at my own detriment or rejecting your offer of help. And that can be very awkward. And it’s very difficult to advocate for myself when I’m put in that position. So if you don’t know how to help, just fall back, be safe, better safe than sorry, and support. #AntiAbleism #AntiAbleist #Disability #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityAdvocate #BeAnAlly #Allyship #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent

We talk about autism as a spectrum — and yes, that matters. But what we almost never talk about is how different the lived realities actually are depending on support needs. Autism Level 3 often comes with very real fears about safety, communication, basic care, and survival. And that deserves respect, resources, and visibility. But Autism Level 1 is a completely different experience — and one that gets judged to hell and back. These are the kids who: • look “fine” • are verbal, smart, capable • can pass in public • and often suffer silently And because of that, their parents are told: • “they’re fine” • “you’re overreacting” • “that’s just anxiety” • “other kids have it worse” I once dated someone who casually said, “I can’t stand parents who call high-functioning autistic or ADHD kids special needs.” I hadn’t even shared my own story yet — and still, the judgment was already there. That’s what parents of Level 1 kids live with. We go home to houses that feel like constant nervous system overload. We manage meltdowns, rigidity, school trauma, masking burnout, self-harm fears, and looping anxiety — while being told we should just be grateful because our kids look okay. So when people say “every autistic child is a blessing,” I respect that that may be true for them. Of course, we love our children fiercely. But for many of us parenting kids who suffer internally — who walk around looking fine while their brains feel like hell — autism doesn’t feel like a blessing. It feels like grief, fear, vigilance, and being constantly misunderstood. This isn’t about whose struggle is bigger. It’s about acknowledging that invisible disability comes with invisible pain — and relentless judgment. If this resonates, you’re not imagining it. And you’re not alone. 🫶

Last week I shared about living with an invisible disability and asked if anyone had questions. The responses were thoughtful, kind, and deeply appreciated. Thank you! I saved many of them to a story highlight if you would like to learn more. But I also wanted to show what it visibly looks like because that is the thing. Most of the time, it does not. Some days I am out in the world, smiling and functioning. Other days I am in bed, trying to manage pain, fatigue, or symptoms others cannot see. Archie is by my side through all of it. And I truly believe he was heaven sent.( thank you Scout ) Life with an invisible disability is hard. But then there are these moments quiet, steady and healing that make me believe there is a God. I share these moments to remind anyone else struggling silently that you are not alone. If you are living with an invisible disability, what is one thing you wish people understood? You can find more about this in my story highlight. And if you have any other questions, I am always happy to answer. Remember…a little kindness goes a long way because you never know what someone is carrying behind closed doors. 🤍 . . . . . . . . . . . . . invisible disability awareness | Service dog | living with an invisible illness | mental health #InvisibleDisability #chronicmigraine #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilityAwareness #YouAreNotAlone #ptsdwarrior #kindnessmatters #LifeWithAServiceDog

This wasn’t said because there was a loud crash. She didn’t say it because she thought I needed help. She said it because she was inpatient. This bathroom had 2 stalls. 1 accessible, 1 not. We waited for 10 minutes for the accessible stall to open. We let people cut in front of us to use the regular stall as it opened.. because no other stall works for me. It finally opened. We weren’t begrudging someone using the accessible stall because there were only two, but it is still so painstakingly obvious at how EVERYONE tries to get the accessible stall even when they very likely/often don’t need it. (If you have a invisible disability, I’m obviously not bashing on you) My mom rolled me in, and then went back in line to wait for the regular stall. I finished and was just waiting for my mom to be done when an annoyed lady yelled, “Honey do you need some help in there!?” I immediately panicked and shut down so my mom spoke for me and said no. I didn’t want some stranger getting me out of the restroom—most people don’t! My mom finished, got me out, and we rolled off. The lady was irritated she had to wait 5mins. Welcome to the world of disability. #disability #wheelchair #medicallycomplex #accessibility #fyp

Not all disabilities can be seen. Have you ever seen someone wearing a sunflower pin or lanyard? It could mean they have an invisible disability. 👀 🌻 It’s a simple symbol that they may need extra support, time, or a seat on the train. As Bella says: “Educate yourself and learn from people with disabilities to learn how to support us.” #16DaysofActivism @womenwithdisabilitiesvic [Video description: In a studio with warm lighting a person with short dark hair – Bella, wearing a black t-shirt, a hidden disabilities lanyard with various colourful pins on it, and a grey hoodie sits on a chair. Beside Bella is a glass vase with sunflowers in it. Behind Bella is a blue wall, and some illuminated peach-toned curtains. The video has text captions in white font of what Bella is saying.]

Happy Disability Pride Month. For my mental health, I've chosen not to speak about what I'm going through until I'm on the other side of things. And while the challenges are ongoing, I've moved through and processed enough to share this cautionary tale for anyone who either employs or is a human with an invisible disability. Love you mean it. #disabilitypridemonth #cptsdsurvivor
