K. Hayashi: The other day I went to the Nissan Engine Museum located in Yokohama Plant near NISMO Omori Factory again to inspect many Nissan historic engines and their fascinating history. Amongst the many iconic Road engines were a collection of racing engines. But one in particular stood out. The VRT35, a 3.5 L V12 originally developed for the Sports Car World Championship category following the demise of the JSPC. At that time Nissan also had in mind to participate in F1 and actually reached a rough agreement with Williams F1 team. Unfortunately a series of events led to the cancellation of SWC a Nissan's financial problems following the burst of the bubble economy so it withdraw from F1 plans. The original P35 Group C car, was also created with the aim of winning the Le Mans 24h race, was developed jointly between Japan and North America. The plan was to gain practical experience at the Daytona 24h in February 1993 and win at Le Mans in June. The vehicle was developed by NPTI, a subsidiary of Nissan North America, while the engine was developed by Nissan Oppama. The shakedown took place at a drag race course near NPTI in the spring of 1992. Then, tests were done at circuits across America, and top speed tests conducted at Nissan's Arizona test course. Then fate struck. A few weeks before the 1993 Daytona race, Nissan America decided to discontinue development. Back then the American economy was in recession, and Nissan America no longer wanted to bear racing costs. NPTI was immediately disbanded, and dozens of engineers and mechanics left the team. The NISMO team took over a developed a CFRP chassis. The VRT35 V12 produces approximately 650 PS and then tuned for endurance races. Improvements such as a smaller wheelbase were made, and it was scheduled to participate in Group C races as the NP35. However, as Japan's Group C races ended at the end of 1992, the NP35 was shelved after only making a test entry in the final race at Mine in 1992. Nissan’s own Heritage Collection notes that “R92CP” was essentially the 1992 development for the already proven R91CP and it capped off Nissan’s three-year run of JSPC Constructor’s + Driver’s titles from 1990–1992. Under the bonnet there’s iconic group C tech: 3,5L twin-turbo V8, over 800hp at 7,600 rpm and over 784Nm at 5,600 rpm pushing a roughly 900kg chassis. Even though the R92CP wears a Le Mans-era silhouette, vibe and engineering philosophy, Nissan’s focused on its JSPC (All Japan Sports Prototype Championship) record rather than at Le Mans. For 3 years from 1990 to 1992 the R9x platform won the JSPC (Japan Sports Prototype Championship) driver and constructor's championships. The R90CK achieved pole position in 1990s Le Mans but it'd be the R90CP driven by Hoshino Kazuyosho, Masahiro Hasemi and Suzuki Toshiro that will finish 5th.
