One for your Kyoto bucket list 🇯🇵 We stayed at @kyoto_machiyas Zeniyacho Ai, which comes with an indoor AND outdoor bath that looks out into a zen garden. If that’s not your dream bathroom then I don’t know what is. If you’re wondering what a machiya is, it’s a traditional wooden townhouse found in Kyoto that were owned my merchant and artisan families from the Taishō period. Staying in one of these will def top off your Kyoto trip! Kyoto Japan | Japan Travel | Japan Trip | Japan Hotels | Kyoto Hotels | Travel Tips | Japan Travel Guide | Japan Guide

Save this post for Saphir Odoriko details or comment “GUIDE” for my super comprehensive Japan Guide (that features a helpful section on booking speciality trains) 🚆🇯🇵 The Saphir Odoriko is an OG limited express train that essentially features an-all-business-class seating arrangement aka all the seats are green (in JR lingo). This is a sightseeing train designed to give you the ultimate viewing journey with large windows and skylights 😍 The train runs from Tokyo to Shimoda (the coastal city in the south of the beautiful Izu Peninsula). It also makes some stops along the way. We took it to Ito for a weekend getaway that I have detailed in my Japan III story highlight 🚆the ride to Ito was around 2 hrs long. The basic fare (to Ito) is about $44 USD and goes up depending on the cart and seat that you choose. The private compartments which seat anywhere from 3-6 people traveling as a group come out to $50 per person! There is a restaurant cart on board selected by chef Miyuki Igarashi of the Chinese restaurant “MIYU”. You should book seats in advance on the JR East Saphir Odoriko website. My Japan Guide has a whole help section on booking speciality trains. Comment GUIDE and I will send it to your DM 🙌🏼 Who would you take this train with? #japantrain #saphirodoriko #🇯🇵 #ito #izu #odoriko

Comment “GUIDE” to get my Japan guide + a step-by-step manual to book this train ! 🇯🇵👇🏼 Japan trains are next level 🤯🚂 You would think that this is an expensive, luxury experience but, believe it or not, it’s just a special version of an express train. It’s called the “Aoniyoshi” Sightseeing Limited Express and you can take it between Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. It costs an additional $5 to your regular one way fare (on the Kyoto-Nara line) and the ride is ~40 minutes. You can purchase tickets on the Kintetsu website or at the ticket counter in the station. Seats A&B are facing each other, while C&D are angled towards the window. Both options come with an epic window view! Car number 2 also has suites for groups of four. If you’re traveling solo, you would have to book two “twin” seats (for example an adult and a child seat) because they don’t sell individual tickets. It’s still worth it for what it is, in my opinion 🙂 There are actually many epic and unique train journeys that you can do throughout Japan. Especially short sightseeing ones. We kind of stumbled upon this one by accident and I am so happy that we did. Might be the best $5 I’ve spent 😄 Do you like train journeys? 🚂 #japantrain #🇯🇵 #kyoto #nara #aoniyoshi

Japan - one of the world’s most stunning, intriguing, warm and unforgettable places 💚🌸 If it’s on your dream list, here are some quick tips: 👉 The cherry blossom time is beautiful, but with the seasons all messed up by climate change, it’s getting harder to predict when the blossom really happens. Plus the anticipated spring season is crowded and expensive. Go in late winter, early spring or autumn instead. 👉 There is so much to experience in Japan beyond Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. I especially loved my time slow travelling through Aso and Yakushima! 👉 Surprisingly, I learnt that traditional Japanese cuisine has vegan roots! Do your research, connect with local vegans, and check out the in-depth vegan in Japan guide on my blog. 👉 Japan is expensive - but staying in traditional ryokans, taking the high speed trains, indulging in Japanese cuisine (a lot more than sushi!), and seeking out local cultural experiences are a once in a lifetime experience. 👉 Definitely learn some phrases in Japanese. But also know that there is no language challenge that can’t be overcome with the warmth and kindness of the Japanese people 💚 Do you dream of visiting Japan someday?
