Here are some of my favorite shade-loving pairings: • Hellebores for early spring blooms • Astilbe for soft, feathery texture • Heuchera for color and contrast • Bottlebrush buckeye for bold structure and pollinator-friendly • Pieris japonica for evergreen interest • Japanese maple for height and movement • And yes… even more hydrangeas for that lush, layered look These all play really well with shade-loving hydrangeas and help create that full, cottage garden feel without looking crowded. Weeping Japanese maple should be pruned after they have been in that location in the ground for three whole years. We prune in late winter before the spring growth starts and those leaf buds start pushing out. I needed to do a lot of pruning on this because it was the first time my tree was pruned. However, their full glory only lasted for a few days before recent rains knocked out the majority of the leaves, scattering them in thick carpets on the ground. While this may seem tragic, it’s actually a great example of one of the fundamental principles underlying Japanese gardens—mono no aware, the wistful appreciation for the transience of life.
