3RTime Out — The Album That Rewrote Jazz’s Rhythmic Rules
The Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded Time Out across three sessions in 1959. Columbia’s legendary 30th Street Studio in New York City hosted the recording. Columbia Records officially released the album on December 14, 1959. Label executives were nervous — they doubted the public would accept its unconventional time signatures.
Dave Brubeck commanded the piano with bold, block-chord authority. Paul Desmond’s alto saxophone offered a lyrical, intimate counterpoint to Brubeck’s forceful approach. Drummer Joe Morello and bassist Eugene Wright locked in with precision and drive. These four musicians built something jazz had never attempted before.
“Blue Rondo à la Turk” opens the album with an insistent 9/8 rhythmic pattern. Brubeck discovered these aksak rhythms through Turkish street musicians encountered on a 1958 world tour. His piano figures are sharp and angular; Desmond’s alto arrives with cool, airy grace. The piece builds to a powerful, blues-driven piano solo that thunders with surprising force.
“Take Five,” composed by Desmond, became the best-selling jazz single in history. Brubeck holds an unwavering 5/4 piano vamp throughout — and it works brilliantly. Desmond’s melody is arching, gorgeous, and deceptively relaxed over an unusual pulse. Morello’s drum solo is daring, inventive, and utterly unforgettable.
