NASA's Juno spacecraft has captured stunning views of a gigantic lava lake on Jupiter's moon Io—the most volcanically active world in our solar system. Known as Loki Patera, this colossal molten reservoir stretches about 124 miles (200 km) long, dwarfing any volcano on Earth. During close flybys in December 2023 and February 2024, JunoCam revealed light reflecting off its surface with mirror-like clarity, hinting at ultra-smooth, recently cooled lava resembling polished glass or obsidian. Io's relentless volcanism is powered by tidal heating: Jupiter's powerful gravity squeezes and stretches the moon's interior, generating intense friction and heat that keeps magma churning endlessly. Unlike typical volcanoes, Loki Patera is a vast volcanic depression featuring periodic crustal overturns—the cooled surface crust grows dense and sinks, unleashing waves of fresh magma from below. This cycle reshapes the landscape with volcanic islands, glowing rims, and ever-changing molten seas. These observations offer scientists an extraordinary glimpse into how gravitational forces sculpt extreme alien geology, proving even distant moons can host wildly dynamic and violent environments. #NASA #JunoMission #Io #Volcanoes #SpaceExploration #Jupiter #LavaLake #LokiPatera #SolarSystem #Astrobiology #alchetron #viral Read : https://alchetron.com/Io-(moon)

2025 December 14 Juno Flyby of Ganymede and Jupiter Video Credit: NASA, JPL-Caltech, SWRI, MSSS; Animation: Koji Kuramura, Gerald Eichstädt, Mike Stetson; Music: Vangelis Explanation: What would it be like to fly over the largest moon in the Solar System? In 2021, the robotic Juno spacecraft flew past Jupiter's huge moon Ganymede and took images that have been digitally constructed into a detailed flyby. As the featured video begins, Juno swoops over the two-toned surface of the 5,000-km wide moon, revealing an icy alien landscape filled with grooves and craters. The grooves are likely caused by shifting surface plates, while the craters are caused by violent impacts. Continuing on in its orbit, Juno then performed its 34th close pass over Jupiter's clouds. The digitally-constructed video shows numerous swirling clouds in the north, colorful planet-circling zones and bands across the middle -- featuring several white-oval clouds from the String of Pearls, and finally more swirling clouds in the south.

Something shattered Jupiter's core bill

Watch our full video here: https://youtube.com/watch?v=fx3wfAeTgiA (copy and paste the url into your browser) Something shattered Jupiter's core billions of years ago — and the planet still hasn't recovered. NASA's Juno spacecraft revealed that the textbook picture of Jupiter's interior, repeated for over fifty years, was structurally wrong at every depth. For decades, planetary scientists assumed Jupiter had a dense rocky core — the original seed around which hydrogen and helium accumulated during formation. Surrounding it: metallic hydrogen, a substance where atoms are crushed so close their electrons flow freely, turning hydrogen into liquid metal. Clean layers, sharp boundaries. Juno's gravity science instrument, tracking velocity changes to fractions of a millimeter per second, proved none of it was true. In 2022, Ravit Helled's team at the University of Zurich published the definitive analysis: Jupiter has a dilute core. Heavy elements distributed throughout the inner half of the planet with no sharp boundary. The leading explanation, published in Nature by Shang-Fei Liu in 2019, is cataclysmic — a protoplanet roughly ten times Earth's mass slammed into Jupiter head-on within its first few million years, shattering the original core entirely. After 4.5 billion years, the mixing still hasn't settled. Juno also mapped Jupiter's magnetic field — twenty thousand times stronger than Earth's — revealing the Great Blue Spot and confirming that metallic hydrogen generates the most lethal radiation environment around any planet. Near the cloud tops, radiation would kill an unshielded human within minutes. Jupiter is the reference model for every gas giant and exoplanet ever studied. Juno proved that reference was wrong — and everything calibrated against it needs revision.

INFO In this view of a vortex near Jupiter’s north pole, NASA’s Juno mission observed the glow from a bolt of lightning. On Earth, lightning bolts originate from water clouds, and happen most frequently near the equator, while on Jupiter lightning likely also occurs in clouds containing an ammonia-water solution, and can be seen most often near the poles. In the coming months, Juno’s orbits will repeatedly take it close to Jupiter as the spacecraft passes over the giant planet’s night side, which will provide even more opportunities for Juno’s suite of science instruments to catch lightning in the act. Juno captured this view as Juno completed its 31st close flyby of Jupiter on Dec. 30, 2020. In 2022, Citizen scientist Kevin M. Gill processed the image from raw data from the JunoCam instrument aboard the spacecraft. At the time the raw image was taken, Juno was about 19,900 miles (32,000 kilometers) above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 78 degrees as it approached the planet. #Jupiter #SpacePhotography #Astronomy #GreenLight #PlanetJupiter #SpaceWonder #CosmicBeauty #OuterSpace #PlanetObservation #AstronomyLovers #SpacePhenomenon #JupiterAtmosphere #Stargazing #UniverseExploration #ᴀsᴛʀᴏᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

🌋🛰 A volcanic eruption… on another world. This spectacular sequence shows a massive eruption on Jupiter’s moon Io, captured by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft. The footage was taken over just 8 minutes, revealing a towering plume blasting material hundreds of kilometers above the surface. Io is the most volcanically active world in our solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes powered by intense gravitational forces from Jupiter and neighboring moons. When space probes catch one of these eruptions in action, it’s like watching an alien volcano come to life. 🎥 Credit: NASA #Io #Volcanoes #Jupiter #SolarSystem #SpaceExploration

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has captured the most powerful volcanic eruption ever recorded in the solar system on Jupiter’s moon Io, featuring simultaneous outbursts from multiple volcanoes that blanketed about 40,000 square miles and unleashed energy between 140 and 260 terawatts—several times greater than Mount St. Helens’ eruption. This synchronized event suggests a hidden, sponge-like network of magma reservoirs beneath Io’s crust, linked so pressure in one can trigger eruptions across many. Juno’s infrared JIRAM instrument detected massive hot spots during a close flyby, with future passes expected to scan for fresh lava flows and ash. Published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, these observations reveal the volcanic moon’s extreme geology shaped by Jupiter’s tidal forces.
