REPokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition is a role playing video game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. Released in 1998 in Japan and internationally in 1999, it is an enhanced version of Pokémon Red and Blue that incorporates elements from the popular animated series.
The game takes place in the Kanto region and follows a young Trainer on a journey to become the Pokémon Champion. Unlike previous versions, players begin with Pikachu as their starter Pokémon, which follows the player character on screen and reacts to actions and events. This feature added a stronger sense of personality and connection compared to earlier titles.
The storyline closely mirrors the anime adaptation. Players encounter characters such as Jessie and James from Team Rocket, who appear at various points throughout the game. MYWhat if we told you that Pokemon almost died before it ever became a phenomenon, and the only reason we are celebrating 30 years is because of a secret that was never supposed to exist?
This is Mew's origin story.
Pokemon Red and Green released in Japan in February 1996. And they were failing. Sales were so slow that Game Freak thought they had missed their moment. The franchise was about to fade into nothing.
But then players started discovering something strange.
A 151st Pokemon that wasn't in any guide. Wasn't supposed to be catchable. Rumors spread about a truck in Vermillion City. Kids called Nintendo asking about it.
And here is the thing. Nintendo didn't even know it existed.
A programmer named Shigeki Morimoto had secretly added Mew as a prank 2 weeks before launch. He hid it in the leftover space from deleted debug code. It was only meant for the developers to enjoy.
But when players found Mew through glitches, the mystery exploded. Everyone wanted the secret Pokemon. Sales went from monthly numbers to weekly numbers.
Pokemon went from failing to number 1 in Japan.
Tomorrow is Pokemon Day. 30 years. But without Mew, there is no 30 years.
The secret that was never supposed to exist became the reason everything else does.
