THIn my first year of teaching, “common core” math was being rolled out and it was treated like a bad word. Parents were so incredibly frustrated. I ended up making weekly YouTube videos for my students (actually moreso for their parents) so they could stay in the loop as to how we were learning to be mathematical problem solvers. Once you give these “new methods” a chance you understand there’s a method to the madness, and that all of that madness makes you truly understand the method, the reasoning, rather than memorizing a formula.
Math is my thing, so when @singaporemath wanted to send me this book to see what I thought, I knew I’d be interested. This book is geared for math skills grade k-5. It compares how you may of learned to why it isn’t most beneficial to be learning it that way. If you don’t have background knowledge in these math processes, I highly recommend this book. It simply breaks math down to the basics & illustrates best practices.
Seeing my 5 year old solve multiplication problems mentally because he knows how to decompose numbers always makes me think: I didn’t learn math that way, but I wish I did.
