History was made on Wednesday when Daniel Cressy, a 23-year-old patient at Manning Family Children's, became the first person in Louisiana to receive a groundbreaking gene therapy that could essentially cure his sickle cell disease! This transformational cure won’t just end years of pain—it could put him in the cockpit, chasing his dream of becoming a pilot. The treatment works by extracting Daniel's own blood stem cells, modifying them in a lab to produce healthy hemoglobin, and infusing them back into his body after chemotherapy. This process creates new red blood cells that do not sickle to effectively cure the disease. On Wednesday, these new healthy cells were infused, and Daniel will now stay at Children's for a few more weeks while he recovers. Stay tuned for more on Daniel’s groundbreaking treatment!

Today we’re celebrating two incredible milestones. 🎉 A’Zaria (14) and La’Nijah (17) are celebrating life after gene therapy — a new groundbreaking treatment for sickle cell disease that uses a patient’s own cells, meaning no donor is needed. ✨ Grateful to be part of their journey with Rikin Shah, MD, and the team at the Haley Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. 🧡 #SickleCell #GeneTherapy #ArnoldPalmerKid

I’m genuinely disgusted. I can’t believe with all the work that’s being done to spread awareness and educate people on sickle cell and the damage it’s doing within our community this is what’s happening If you have people like this around you EDUCATE them! This mindset is not normal! If you have time to be making fun of the condition then surely you have capacity to donate blood and learn about the condition! Please let us do better as a community 🙏🏾❤️ #sicklecell #sicklecellawareness #pkhumble #twitch #thepapursuit

After 9 months of praying and petition, we got the approval for Gabriel to get gene therapy to cure him of sickle cell disease. The process is rigorous and long but God has already done it. As part of the 1.5 years long process, he has been getting exchanged transfusions and last week was admitted to the hospital for stem cell collection. He did amazing and they were able to collect all the cells needed, 30 million cell, and more. Now we wait for another 3 to 6 months for the cells to be worked on and then we will go back for a month long admission for the genetically modified stem cells to be transplanted into him. As we wait, we continue to pray and praise our Father in heaven for all He is doing. #sicklecellwarrior #godsgrace

22 years. For 22 years, my niece Kayla lived with sickle cell disease — a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become rigid and crescent-shaped, blocking blood flow and oxygen throughout the body. It means unpredictable pain crises. Endless hospital stays. A life interrupted over and over again. But Kayla never let it define her. In 2023, a breakthrough emerged — gene therapy that could cure sickle cell completely. Kayla didn’t hesitate. She said yes immediately, knowing the road ahead would be brutal. But she was ready to be free. Here’s what the process looked like: Her stem cells were collected over a year. In a lab, scientists extracted the healthy cells from the sickled ones. Then in February 2026, we got the call. It was time. First came five days of the most intense chemotherapy possible — killing the bad cells to make room for the good. Then Day 0. Transplant day. The day she was reborn. What followed was round-the-clock monitoring. Blood transfusions to feed the new stem cells. Constant testing to make sure no sickled cells were forming. And they weren’t. They were gone. But the journey wasn’t easy. Kayla faced every side effect of chemo, including one of the hardest — losing her hair. And like all things, she handled it with grace and bravery. 25 days after walking into that hospital with sickle cell, she rang the bell and walked out sickle cell free. Alhamdulillah. الحمد لله. Allah swt is so merciful. And through it all? Her family never left her side. Not for one moment. Her mother and father slept at the hospital, took time off work to be by their baby’s side. Grandma and I took day shifts. And little sis Kiana was always there to bring a smile to her sister’s face. This is the miracle of God and science working together. This is Kayla. Cured. Free. Just getting started. 💕 #SickleCell #GeneTherapy #SickleCellWarrior #Healed
