DA🌕💥 LRO Found A Fresh Moon Crater
LRO found a fresh 225-meter crater on the Moon that formed in late spring 2024. That makes it the largest known new crater seen during the mission, with bright ejecta, a dark rough floor, and blocks large enough to read as real hazards.
The crater matters because most lunar impacts are studied long after their timing has been lost. Here, before-and-after imaging gives scientists a rare timestamped example of how a large modern impact rewrites the surface.
The measured depth is about 43 meters, which helps test how energy, target material, and ejecta patterns scale for fresh lunar scars. The abstract also notes that a crater this large would be expected only about once every 139 years on a comparable patch of lunar surface.
That rarity turns one hole into a calibration point for impact risk and surface evolution. For future lunar operations, the same evidence matters because fresh blocks, ejecta tongues, and rough floors are exactly the hazards crews and machines must understand.
The important visual difference is the ejecta, because the bright thrown material shows the impact changed more than the circular hole. A diagonal pass across that debris field should make the crater feel newly carved rather than like an old lunar landmark.
