SHWhy does kit sound different from kite?
In kit, the letter I makes its short sound — /i/.
In kite, the letter I says its name — /ai/.
That’s because vowels have two types of sounds:
Short sounds and Long sounds.
Short vowel = regular sound
apple, elephant, insect, ostrich, umbrella
Long vowel = vowel says its name
acorn, eagle, island, oatmeal, unicorn
Understanding this difference helps children read and spell more confidently.
