As a reading teacher and a mom, these are the three things I care about most before kindergarten. 1. Talk about anything and everything Conversation builds vocabulary and language, which research shows is one of the strongest foundations for reading. It also helps kids understand and follow directions, explain their thinking, and participate in a classroom. 2. Play games Board games are wildly underrated. Kids are building early math thinking, practicing self regulation, learning to wait their turn, handling frustration, and using working memory to remember rules and plan moves. 3. Read every day Reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do for early literacy. Books grow vocabulary, knowledge about the world, and comprehension. Kids who are read to a lot walk into kindergarten with a huge language advantage. This is what I focus on with my own kids, and it’s what I saw matter most in my classroom. Talk. Play. Read. Follow along for more ways to build a confident learner. #intentionalparenting #earlylearningmatters #raisingreaders #preschoolers #toddler

Which of the three tools I shared this week seemed most helpful to you? Today is the final day of sharing some of my favorite materials for supporting early reading. Today’s tool: a Touch and Read Phonics set. This type of material helps children connect sounds to the letters that represent them. Children touch each sound as they say it and then blend the sounds together to read the word. It’s a simple way to help children move from hearing sounds to actually reading words. Small tools used consistently can make a big difference in building strong reading foundations. If you’d like a clear, simple plan for doing this at home, that’s exactly what I created inside my course A Simple 21-Day, No-Tech Plan to Help Your Child Learn to Read. #learningthroughplay #parentcourse #readingtutor

We’ve been keeping things simple by focusing on one word family at a time. In this case, the “-at” sounds… hat, mat, rat, fat. It gives him a chance to notice the pattern and play around with it while building confidence. We keep it short, about 5–7 minutes a day, and follow his pace so it stays enjoyable. He really leans into it when it feels like play. #toddlerlife #learningthroughplay #parentingtips #toddlerreading #earlyliteracy

Watching children begin to blend sounds together is one of the most exciting moments in early reading. 📚 Blending is the skill that helps children move from knowing letter sounds to actually reading words. When children hear the sounds stretched together, they start to understand how the word forms. This is why practicing phonics and blending is such an important first step in learning to read. All you need is a few minutes of simple practice each day! If you’re ready to start teaching your child to read at home, send me a DM. I would love to help you get started. Parents, try this quick reading test with your child tonight. If they can read the, was, come, said… but struggle with lat, mip, teb… you might be seeing the difference between memorizing words and actually reading. Real reading happens when children understand how letters represent sounds. That’s the skill that helps them read new words they’ve never seen before. The good news? This skill can be strengthened with simple sound games that take just a few minutes a day. Try the test and let me know what happens. If your child could read them, comment “reader.” If it was tricky, comment “help.” #learnhowtoread #phonicsforkids #parentingtips #earlyliteracy #readinghelp

If you are only going to do one tip make sure is this one! The biggest mistake parents make with toddler reading? Stopping too soon. Toddlers are learning to focus little by little. Some days they listen, some days they run around—and that’s okay. What matters most is showing up and keeping storytime a habit, because those small moments build a lifelong love for books And remember The moms raising readers are not the perfect ones… they’re the ones who keep trying. . . . #tipsforreadingwithchuldren #loveforreading #readingactivity #teachyourchildrentoread #preschoolathome
