PODogs are associative learners — they connect actions with outcomes.
When a dog pulls and the walk keeps going, pulling is rewarded.
But when the walk stops, that feedback loop breaks.
By waiting for a “check-in” (eye contact, turning back), you’re teaching your dog that engaging with you = forward motion.
They learn:
🔸 Pulling = no reward
🔸 Checking in = reward (movement, sometimes praise/treats)

EMMost new puppy owners make the same error: they only put the leash on when it’s walk time.
➡️➡️➡️➡️Big mistake.
➡️Here’s what happens:
Your 8-week-old puppy learns that leash = MAXIMUM EXCITEMENT TIME. No calm behavior required, just pure chaos the second that leash appears.
➡️Fast forward 6 months and you’ve got a 60-pound teenager who loses their mind every time you reach for the leash.
✅How to prevent this (start at 8 weeks):
Step 1: Practice leash on/off when there’s NO walk happening
Step 2: Require a sit before any leash touches their body
Step 3: If they move, leash goes away immediately (my puppies did a little moving but that was on me because I couldn’t find the dang clasp on the collar!)
Step 4: Only proceed when they’re calm and still
Step 5: Do this 5+ times before any actual walk

POHe did so good on this walk, I was so proud — went through a whole treat pouch with kibble and freeze dried liver 😅 Dogs are associative learners, meaning they learn by forming connections between behaviors and consequences. Through operant conditioning, the behavior of making eye contact is reinforced when it produces a reward, resulting in the behavior becoming more frequent over time. This shifts their focus from the environment to you, reducing pulling and reactivity.
This skill is foundational in loose leash walking because it:
• Promotes handler awareness and self-regulation
• Makes it easier to layer in cues like “leave it,” “heel,” or “watch me”
• Boosts dopamine and engagement when paired with rewards—making it neurologically motivating
Teaching your puppy to focus on you during walks is one of the most effective ways to shape leash behavior, because it taps into how dogs naturally learn: through patterns, timing, and repetition. Dogs trained to check in are more likely to respond to mid-walk cues and less likely to stay locked on distractions.
