CAEveryone thought I was having a midlife crisis when I left my life in the UK to go to South America.
Usually it’s the other way around. People leave South America for Europe for more opportunities.
My family is originally from Chile. I was born in Sweden and grew up in England. People used to ask me, “Where do you feel like you’re really from?”
In 2022 my life fell apart. I lost my father and went through a painful breakup. I felt completely lost.
I asked for a sabbatical from my hospital job and travelled the world. I visited 15 countries, highlights: Camino de Santiago, the Himalayas, and eventually South America.
When I arrived in Chile and Argentina something shifted. For the first time in my life, I felt completely at home. Every cell in my body felt alive.
After that trip I returned to Chile every year, especially the south: Patagonia. I couldn’t stay away.
Eventually the feeling of being stuck and in a career the felt unfulfilling in London became stronger than the fear of leaving.
When I signed up for a marathon in Patagonia in September, I made a decision. Instead of asking work for 3 weeks off… I quit.
I put my life into storage and jumped on a plane to Chile. I don’t think I’ve ever felt freer.
Right now I’m back in Sweden, sorting out my citizenship status to legally live in Chile and living with my mum at the age of 38 and figuring out important decisions. Some days I even ask myself… am I a failure? I should be in a loving relationship and be a mother by now.
