Most lifters lose efficiency in the deadlift because they set their feet and grip without understanding how to create leverage. By using the bar to wedge yourself into position and then pushing the knees back as you brace, you build tension through the posterior chain before the bar ever leaves the floor. Research on bar path mechanics shows that the shortest, most vertical bar path is the most efficient way to move maximal loads (Garhammer, 1993; Hales, 2002). Small deviations forward increase shear torque at the spine and demand far more from the lower back. This is why bar body relationship, bracing, and proper use of the quads to initiate drive are non negotiables at heavy loads. My shorter torso gives me an edge in deadlifts as less range to pull and more efficient leverage from the hips.
