Vivaldi non lasciò alcun dubbio su ciò che questa musica dovesse significare. Scrisse un intero sonetto per accompagnare l’Inverno e annotò direttamente nelle parti strumentali ciò che ogni musicista doveva imitare: il corpo che trema dal freddo, le raffiche di vento, la neve che colpisce il viso. Non è una metafora né un’interpretazione postuma. Sono istruzioni del compositore stesso, scritte nella partitura, verso dopo verso. Nel 1725, senza altro mezzo se non corde di budello e archetti di legno, un prete veneziano asmatico decise che la musica poteva diventare paesaggio.

Il primo movimento inizia con tutti gli archi che suonano note rapide e ripetute, corte, quasi aggressive. È il corpo che si contrae contro il ghiaccio, i muscoli che reagiscono al freddo prima della mente. Quando entra il violino solista, le note salgono e scendono velocemente, irregolari, cambiando intensità senza preavviso. È il vento. Vivaldi non descrive l’inverno: trasforma gli strumenti nell’inverno stesso. Ogni strato dell’orchestra porta un elemento diverso della scena, e tutti convergono in un unico quadro sonoro che l’orecchio ricompone da solo.

Questa registrazione restituisce all’opera una tessitura che si è persa nelle versioni moderne. Le corde di budello suonano più grezze, più organiche, più vicine a ciò che Vivaldi ascoltava quando scrisse la musica. Cynthia Freivogel suona e dirige allo stesso tempo, senza direttore, guidando l’ensemble con il corpo. Era la pratica del XVIII secolo: musicisti che si ascoltano, respirano insieme e reagiscono in tempo reale. L’Inverno che riconosci, ma con il suono che avrebbe sempre dovuto avere.
