A report from MIT Technology Review highlights just how energy-intensive AI video generation can be. Researchers estimate that creating a 5-second AI video may require around 3.4 million joules of energy, roughly comparable to running a microwave for more than an hour. The reason is that video models process enormous amounts of data. Unlike text or images, AI video systems must generate thousands of frames while calculating motion, lighting, and visual details across millions of pixels. By comparison, a typical AI text response may consume between about 114 and 6,700 joules, while AI image generation can require hundreds of times less energy than video generation. Researchers, including Sasha Luccioni from Hugging Face, analyzed open-source models and found that video’s pixel-heavy structure dramatically increases computing demands. As tools like Sora and other AI video platforms grow in popularity, experts say the electricity demand of data centers could rise significantly. The findings highlight a growing question in the AI world: how to balance powerful new capabilities with their environmental impact. Most people think AI is just software. But every prompt you type… every image you generate… every AI video you create… burns real electricity somewhere in the world. According to research reported by MIT Technology Review, the energy cost of AI generation is far higher than most people expect. Generating a single 5-second AI video can require around 3.4 million joules of energy. That’s roughly the same electricity as running a microwave for about an hour. Now think about a normal AI user’s day: • 15 chatbot questions • 10 AI images generated • 3 short AI videos All together, that can consume around 2.9 kWh of electricity. In simple terms: That’s like running a microwave for more than 3½ hours. And this is happening millions of times every day worldwide. Because of this massive demand, data centers now consume about 4.4% of all electricity in the United States, and their energy usage has more than doubled since 2017 as AI systems rapidly scale. The convenience of AI is incredible. But behind every AI response… every generated image… every video… there are thousands of servers, cooling systems, and power grids working nonstop. It’s the hidden cost of artificial intelligence that most people never see. The question isn’t whether AI will change the world. It already is. The real question is how much energy the future of AI will require. Follow for daily AI insights, tools, and tech signals shaping the future. #ai #ainews #aitech

Researchers studying AI’s energy demand say the electricity behind your prompts may be much higher than people expected. Estimates show a single AI request can use several times more power than a typical search query, and the demand grows quickly as models process more complex tasks. The biggest spike appears when you generate media. Creating AI images or short video clips requires thousands of GPUs running at once inside data centers, and the energy used for just a few seconds of generated video can equal running household appliances for extended periods. Every prompt you send has to move through massive computing clusters designed to handle these workloads. Individually, the energy behind one request feels small. The real impact shows up through scale as millions of people generate text, images, and video every day. Your prompts are processed in large data centers filled with specialized chips, and researchers say global AI energy demand could keep climbing as usage expands. #artificialintelligenceai #ai #tech #technology #robotic
