They don’t: Because typical drug dosages were designed around male weight and metabolism, women have been twice as likely to suffer serious side effects from some prescription medications. Some heart drugs that save men’s lives can increase cardiac deaths in women. Fibroids are a defining example of this medical exclusion. They affect up to 80% of women. They’re the #1 reason for hysterectomy in this country. They cost the US $34 billion annually. And they remain one of the most underfunded conditions in medicine. That’s like going to the dentist with a cavity and being told to pull out all your teeth. ‼️ There are absolutely situations where full or partial removal of the uterus is the right call. But for a non-cancerous condition, it shouldn’t be where we start. After 12 years with #fibroids, I can no longer wait around for change to happen around me; I want to help make it happen! She went from changing her pads every 30 minutes to changing every 4 to 5 hours!!! 💪🏾 Pain … ELIMINATED 💪🏾 Flow … Minimal 💪🏾 Bloating / Cramping … Nonexistent Crystal experienced a sense of normalcy for the first time in YEARS! She found her confidence! She said “life is getting easier!” Crystal found her joy again after years of suffering. This is just the beginning! Fibroids in the UK NEED to be talked about more. Up to 1 in 3 women will develop fibroids yet so many are suffering in silence. Fibroids (also known as uterine leiomyomas) are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb, but “non-cancerous” does NOT mean harmless. For many women, fibroids mean: Heavy or prolonged periods. Debilitating menstrual pain. Bloating and abdominal swelling. Frequent urination. Fertility challenges. Anaemia caused by excessive blood loss. And in the UK, the struggle doesn’t stop at symptoms. Many women face long GP referral processes, extended NHS waiting lists for scans and surgery, and limited conversations about non-surgical or holistic management options. Black women are statistically more likely to develop fibroids, often at younger ages and with more severe symptoms yet racial disparities in diagnosis and treatment still exist. Last July, @lupitanyongo broke her silence about living with fibroids. This week she spoke on the Today Show, reminding the world why that moment mattered. In 2014, she had 30 fibroids removed. Twelve years later, they have returned. More than 50 fibroids. More pain. The treatment options remain largely the same. She is now using her platform for change, partnering with @foundationwomenshealth to launch a research grant funding scientists developing less invasive treatments for fibroids. This is why voices like hers matter. Speaking about fibroids is not easy, but every story shared makes the silence smaller. Common does not mean normal! Today I’m reflecting on a different kind of milestone. Years ago, fibroids nearly took my life. During surgery, doctors removed eight fibroids the size of oranges and grapefruits from my body. In that moment I heard words many women hear after a diagnosis like that: You will likely never have children. While the other women who had surgery the same week went home after 48 hours, I remained in the hospital for more than a week — getting sicker instead of better. Eventually I was flown to a specialist. What doctors first believed was an abscess turned out to be something much more complicated: one of the fibroids had rolled underneath my colon. The surgery that followed required a colon resection, and months of recovery. When I finally returned to my life, I was not the same woman who had walked into that hospital. At the time it felt like loss. Loss of health. Loss of certainty. Loss of the future I thought I would have. But nearly fifteen years later, I see something very differently. That experience changed my relationship with life — and with creation itself. Because fertility isn’t only about what we birth physically. It’s also about what we bring into the world through our courage, our work, and the lives we choose to build. Sometimes the body is forced to release what it cannot carry. And in that space, something else begins to grow. For me, that experience awakened a hunger to live more fully, to build things that matter, and to help others rediscover their capacity to begin again. And the doctors were wrong. God had more to say. Today I’m the mother of two beautiful children — miracles I was once told might never exist.
