The Matilda effect is a bias against acknowledging the achievements of women scientists, instead attributing their work to their male colleagues.
This phenomenon was first described by suffragist and abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage in her 1883 essay “Woman as Inventor,” and the term was coined in 1993 by science historian Margaret W. Rossiter.
Key aspects of the Matilda effect:
