Garland supports Minister’s decision to close sand flathead fishery in South East Tasmania Media Release Wednesday 4 February 2026 Craig Garland MP has welcomed today’s announcement by the Minister for Fisheries, Gavin Pearce, to reduce fishing pressure on the sand flathead fishery in the State’s southeast by closing it to recreational fishers. “I congratulate Minister Pearce on making this decision. It follows the closure of the fishery to commercials in 2023 and from the warning given to recreational fishers last year by the former Fisheries Minister, Eric Abetz. It’s good to see the Government acting on warnings, rather than running away from them.” “It is well past time to take bold action to assist the recovery of what is a clearly depleted stock.” Mr Garland said the decision was the right one because it is grounded in science. “The IMAS fishery assessment released in late November could not have been clearer. Stock surveys conducted in 2024–25 found that: “In the southeast, just one per cent of fish were legal-sized, and female spawning potential is depleted across most regions — in the southeast it may be as low as five per cent of unfished levels. Those figures are alarming.” He said most recreational fishers already understood how serious the situation had become. (Read more below)👇
