🦴 Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture, making bones fragile and more prone to fractures. It commonly affects the hip, spine, and wrist, especially in postmenopausal women and elderly individuals.
The condition is often called the “silent disease” because bone loss occurs gradually without symptoms until a fracture happens. Common risk factors include aging, low calcium/vitamin D intake, hormonal changes, smoking, alcohol use, prolonged steroid therapy, and lack of physical activity.
Diagnosis is mainly done using a DEXA scan, where a T-score ≤ −2.5 confirms osteoporosis. Management includes calcium and vitamin D supplementation, weight-bearing exercise, lifestyle modifications, and medications such as bisphosphonates, denosumab, SERMs, or teriparatide depending on severity.
