Born June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, Morgan Freeman has deep roots in this city. As a child, he was sent to live with his grandmother in Charleston, Mississippi, and spent much of his childhood moving between Mississippi and Chicago, including time in Greenwood, MS. To me, his most powerful role was Lean on Me a performance that showed leadership, discipline, and belief in community when it mattered most. repost from @memphisforgotten Memphis rang the bell for the world in 1979. Born in Memphis, Anita Ward went from substitute teacher to global superstar with Ring My Bell a disco anthem that hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Soul Singles chart, and charts around the world. Written by Frederick Knight and driven by its unmistakable electronic beat and chimes, the song became one of the defining records of the disco era. Anita earned a Grammy nomination and left a permanent mark on music history. Another reminder that Memphis influence doesn’t stop at soul and blues it echoed straight onto the world stage. Built in the 1950s, this former feed mill tied to Allied Mills and Purina once played a role in Memphis’ industrial economy. After sitting abandoned for decades, it became one of the city’s most known urban exploration spots covered in graffiti and towering over Orange Mound. 💬 What do you remember about this building? Early 2000s footage from the Foote Holmes projects captures real life around the neighborhood court a place to hoop, talk, laugh, and build bonds that lasted beyond the game. This same court was part of the Allen Iverson “I3” initiative, tying Memphis culture to one of basketball’s biggest icons. For many, this wasn’t just a court it was community. And for some seen here, these moments are all that’s left. Memphis question: What courts did you grow up on? @rach.society @memphyswater #MemphisForgotten #FooteHolmes #MemphisHistory #901

🏚️ Hidden deep in the woods of Memphis sits one of the city’s most mysterious and talked about places… Voodoo Village. Also known as St. Paul’s Holiness Temple, the private compound was built by Washington “Doc” Harris, a self-ordained minister who lived there with his family. Over the years, the property became known for its hundreds of handmade wooden sculptures, unusual structures, and powerful spiritual symbolism. For decades, stories spread across Memphis about the secluded land. Some called it sacred. Others called it eerie. But one thing is certain… it became a major part of local urban legend and curiosity. Today, the site remains private property and a reminder that Memphis history isn’t always found in museums. Sometimes, it’s hidden in the woods. 🗣️ Did you ever hear stories about Voodoo Village growing up? Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but we also remember what brought him to Memphis in 1968. One day before he was assassinated, Dr. King stood with our striking sanitation workers and spoke on the Poor People’s Campaign calling out poverty, inequality, and the need for economic justice. Memphis wasn’t just a stop on the map… It was part of the final chapter of his mission. We salute the man. And we salute the city that stood at the center of history. In the winter of 1994, Memphis was rocked by one of its most chilling crimes three lives taken in a night that still echoes through the city’s history. Tony Carruthers later tried, convicted, and sentenced to death was found guilty of the kidnapping, robbery, and murders of Marcellos “Cello” Anderson, his mother Delois, and 17 year old Frederick Tucker. According to court findings, the victims were abducted, bound, shot, and buried alive beneath an existing grave at Rose Hill Cemetery on Elvis Presley Boulevard a cruel concealment in a place built for final rest. Memphis remembers the shock, the headlines, and the decades long legal battles that followed. Carruthers sat many years on Tennessee’s Death Row, his case tied to debates about self representation and justice even claiming he was framed for the killings. May the family rest in peace. 🕯️ 💧@memphyswater #MemphisForgotten #RoseHillCemetery #TrueCrimeMemphis
