MYWhat if I told you that for 30 years, we have been laughing at a Pokemon who rewrote his entire existence just to be loved?
This is Team Rocket's Meowth from the anime. And in three decades of Pokemon, he is still the only one who taught himself to speak human language. Not because he was special, but because he was desperate.
He fell in love with a Meowth named Meowzie who told him she only loved humans. So he decided to become one. He hid in the rafters of a ballet class and forced his body to walk on two legs. He listened to a speech class and repeated words until his meows became sentences. It took him over a year. The first word he ever understood was rocket.
But here is what they do not tell you. Learning to walk and talk cost him everything. Meowth cannot use Pay Day. The signature move of his entire species. He traded his power for the chance to be loved.
And when he finally returned to Meowzie, walking upright, speaking perfect human, holding flowers he saved up to buy... she looked at him and said he was a freak. Worse than before. He literally became something new and she hated him more for it.
For 30 years we have watched him fail to catch Pikachu. But the real tragedy is that Meowth already caught what he was chasing. He just never got to keep it.
