One of country music’s most real and little known stories.
Merle Haggard once admitted he was completely taken by Dolly Parton. During the 70s, while touring together, he fell for her, even knowing it could never be.
Out of that came songs like Always Wanting You, one of his most heartfelt hits, written about a love he could not have.
And in true Merle fashion, he once called Dolly around 3 a.m. just to sing it to her over the phone.
She kindly turned him down, loyal to her husband, but always spoke of him with respect.
No scandal. Just admiration, honesty, and a little bit of heartbreak turned into timeless music.

DIHe was one of the pioneers of the Bakersfield sound. Haggard was also involved in the Outlaw Country movement.
In addition to 40 #1 hits, Haggard has won just about every music award. Haggard's hit "Mama Tried" was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994, he is in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
Along with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band The Strangers helped create the Bakersfield sound, which is characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles in which the words are minimal, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville Sound recordings of the same era.
By the 1970s, Haggard was aligned with the growing outlaw country movement, and has continued to release successful albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
