DMV Airport Delays Are Hitting Hard What DCA IAD And BWI Travelers Need To Know The old two hour airport routine is getting wrecked across the DMV. The real story is bigger than one bad line. TSA staffing has been strained by the DHS funding lapse, and Washington area airports also got slammed Friday night when the Potomac air traffic control facility in Warrenton had another emergency that triggered ground stops across the region. If you are flying out of DCA, Dulles, or BWI, do not treat this like a normal spring break travel day. BWI had some of the worst backups of the weekend and told travelers to arrive up to four hours early at the peak. By Monday things were improving, but officials were still warning people to give themselves extra time. BWI is still telling many passengers to arrive about three hours early. At Dulles, the airport’s normal official guidance is still two hours for domestic and three hours for international flights. If you are flying international, especially with checked bags, build in more cushion than usual and reserve parking before you go. One more thing people should know. ICE personnel were deployed at BWI to support checkpoint operations, but airport officials said TSA is still handling passenger and bag screening. And for international arrivals, the Mobile Passport Control app from U.S. Customs and Border Protection is a real shortcut worth downloading before you land. Detroit Metro Airport saw lots of delays and cancellations on Monday. Dozens of travelers like Houghton resident Clarity Gipp (@claritygipp) saw flights cancelled. She was traveling back to the Upper Peninsula after a visit to Detroit. But, she confirmed with #7newsdetroit that Delta cancelled her flight 15 minutes prior to boarding due to heavy snow. While some travel trouble is certainly due to bad weather including a major winter storm along the East Coast, a lot of travel trouble is due to the partial government shutdown and many TSA workers calling out from work after weeks of no pay. #RyanHMarshall #RyanMarshallWXYZ #WXYZDetroit #travelcancellations

Travelers at Detroit Metro Airport and across the country are experiencing longer security lines as the ongoing government shutdown impacts TSA staffing. The partial shutdown, which began in February 2026, has left thousands of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers working without pay, leading to increased call-offs, resignations, and staffing shortages.  As a result, airports nationwide have reported hours-long wait times, delays, and missed flights, especially during busy travel periods like spring break.  At DTW, officials have warned travelers to expect longer and less predictable lines due to these shortages, with passengers encouraged to arrive earlier than usual.  The shutdown stems from a political standoff over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, and there is currently no clear timeline for when normal operations will resume. 🎥: BreBuckets

News4's Darcy Spencer captured video of long lines at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.⁠ ⁠ Ground stops were called for at all three major D.C.-area airports Friday evening due to a “strong chemical smell” at a facility that manages air traffic in the region, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.⁠ ⁠ No flights are taking off or landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.⁠ ⁠ Flights have been diverted to airports as far away as Cleveland and Raleigh.⁠ ⁠ The ground stops have since been lifted at Dulles and BWI.⁠ ⁠ It’s the second such ground stop in two weeks stemming from Potomac TRACON, a terminal radar approach control facility. The ground stops on March 13 also included Richmond International Airport.
