Japan is working on developing a new generation of earthquake-resistant buildings—structures that can actually “float” during an earthquake. When tremors begin, the entire building lifts off the ground, helping it avoid violent vibrations.
This technology relies on an advanced seismic isolation system that uses air. As soon as sensors detect an earthquake, high-pressure air is pumped beneath the building within 0.5 seconds, raising it several centimeters off the ground. The building temporarily separates from the shaking and rests on a cushion of air until the movement stops.
This technology has already been tested in research centers and small commercial buildings, along with ultra-sensitive motion sensors capable of detecting even the slightest tectonic vibrations from deep within the Earth. This “suspended foundation” significantly reduces damage by preventing strong lateral shaking.
It is engineering that almost seems like science fiction—the buildings don’t just resist earthquakes; they rise above them. No cracks, no collapsing walls, no tilted clouds of dust—just a calm, controlled lift that protects everything inside.
