This #MicroscopeMonday comes from @tardibabe on our BX53 system! 🔬 This awesome video features a Stephanoceros fimbriatus rotifer! "Rotifers are also referred to as « Wheel Animals » because of the rotating cilia, called corona, they have on their heads! They usually use these cilia to create a water current that attracts food particles like bacteria, algae, ciliates and other microorganisms to the mouth. Although this species is a bit different from the other rotifers. Instead of having some rotating wheels on their heads, they have five long tentacles with moving cilia that redirect preys toward the mouth! These rotifers are basically ambush predators waiting for preys to pass by. Preys then get trapped into small compartments before getting pumped by sphincter muscles and ultimately being swallowed. Most rotifers are planktonic and swim around but Stephanoceros fimbriatus is sessile, their adult stage is immobile. When in their larval stage, they swim around until they find a nice spot to stay for the rest of their lives. I found this one sticked to an hydra, which is kind of odd since the hydra could easily have eaten the rotifer." Looking to get into the fascinating world of microscopy? 🌍⚠️ How Things Look Under a Microscope At @decoded_wrld, we zoom in on the hidden world — because the closer you look… the stranger reality becomes. What seems smooth, clean, or simple to your eyes can look completely alien under magnification. 🧂 Salt Crystals Perfect geometric cubes — sharp edges and crystal-clear structure. 🦋 Butterfly Wings Not just color — but thousands of tiny overlapping scales that reflect light like microscopic tiles. 🧵 Fabric Fibers Threads turn into twisted ropes, revealing gaps and rough textures invisible to the naked eye. 🦠 Bacteria Tiny living organisms — shapes like rods, spheres, or spirals moving across surfaces. 🌼 Pollen Grains Not smooth dust — but spiky, sculpted spheres with intricate patterns. 💧 Water Drops Under magnification, even a drop of water can reveal particles, organisms, or surface tension effects. ⚠️ The Truth Your eyes only see a tiny fraction of reality. Microscopes reveal a hidden universe — structured, detailed, and sometimes unsettling. The world isn’t simple. It’s layered. 💬 What everyday object would you want to see under a microscope? 👉 Follow @decoded_wrld for more 🌍 Hidden Worlds & Extreme Science 🎥 Video Credit: DM for credits/removal to the real owner. . . . #decoded_wrld #microworld #sciencefacts #hiddenreality #fyp

Miniature Marvels of the Microverse 🪱🔬👀 Captured by microbiologist Chloe Savard, this is an ultra close-up view into the intimate and microscopic world, of tardigrades ✨ Also known as water bears or moss piglets, compared to many others, this group - know as Milnesium - are absolutely HUGE! Look carefully and you can clearly see their long claws, and even a decorated crown-like snout! 👑 But what’s really impressive about these miniature marvels isn’t just their relative size, it’s how incredibly tough & resilient they are when it comes to surviving extreme environments 💪 Discover more and share your thoughts in the comments 💬💭👉 📹 @tardibabe 🎧 @21savage - ‘redrum’ Want to support the curation of more content just like this? You won’t be-LEAF how cool leaves are under the microscope 😍🍃 “The most amazing thing is that when I looked at the leaf at very high magnification, I could see the chloroplasts moving inside the cells! (chloroplasts are the organelles of the cell that perform photosynthesis). . The chloroplasts do not move by themselves. They get moved by cytoplasmic streaming, which is a mechanism that cells have to move things around in the cytoplasm using the cytoskeleton. . Circling the chloroplasts around the cell by cytoplasmic streaming makes photosynthesis work more efficiently because the chloroplasts get more exposure to sunlight. Since photosynthesis requires light energy, more sunlight energy means more photosynthesis. What a beautiful way to maximize the efficiency of photosynthesis!” 📸: @dr.bio4ever 🔬: Olympus CX30 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #Microscopicworld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #Microworld

As Fergie said, big girls don’t cry - unless it’s for science! 🔬 “You can see as my tear dries up, a beautiful frozen landscape is created ❄️ remember how salty tears are? When water evaporates, salt crystals are formed! Not only do we shed tears when experiencing emotions, but tears are also released every time we blink. While emotional tears indicate distress between individuals from certain animal species, they serve additional functions beyond emotional expression! Tears consist mainly of water, providing hydration to the eye, aiding in clear vision by focusing light, and facilitating the dispersion of electrolytes, proteins, lipids, and mucins. Electrolytes, such as sodium, chloride, calcium, and potassium are important for maintaining pH stability and normal osmotic pressure (they also create beautiful crystalline patterns on the microscope slide when water evaporates). Lots of different proteins are present: some are antimicrobial, some are enzymes that help breakdown lipids and other proteins and some are involved in wound healing and inflammation regulation. Lipids can also be found in tears! Can you see some small oily droplets floating around? These lipids include cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids, and they prevent water from evaporating too quickly.” 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #MicroscopicWorld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #MicroWorld

While some might mistake this image for a star being viewed through a high-powered telescope, it is actually a cell with the actin protein and visualized using an imaging technique called GI-SIM. The actin filaments in this HeLa cell are labeled in red and orange, and the movement you see represents the dynamic nature of these filaments within the cell. The GI-SIM technique allows researchers to examine dynamic cellular processes like this in incredible detail. This will make you want to blow your nose a bit more 🤧🤧 “In a couple of clips from this video you can observe epithelial cells with their huge round nucleus that contains my DNA, they kind of look like fried eggs! 🍳These cells can be found throughout the body, enveloping all body surfaces and lining body cavities or hollow organs. They also form the main tissue in glands! They undertake a diverse array of functions, including protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception. Even if some evil microbes can get inside your nose, they usually get their ass kicked by the resident bacteria. The nasal microbiome is dominated by Actinobacteria, Firmicutes like Staphylococcus, and Proteobacteria such as Enterobacter. However, certain bacteria living in our noses, like Staphylococcus aureus, can become a threat and make us sick under the right conditions.” 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #MicroWorld #Microscopy #Optics #Imaging #Objective #LifeScience #Biology #Research #Science #Scientists #LabLife #Laboratory #ImagingTechnology #FluorescenceMicroscopy #ConfocalMicroscopy #Microbiology #SciArt

Can you guess what this is? 🦠 This is a look at a kidney epithelial cell. It provides important insights into how microvilli, which absorb nutrients, are created and how they behave. You can see the purple microvilli being created with the assistance of the green actin cross-linking proteins which connect actin filaments within a cell. What do you get when you mix yeast, green algae and blood? 🩸🫣 "To simulate an infection, I added yeasts and green algae to a drop of my blood 🦠🩸 Instantly, white blood cells (most probably macrophages and neutrophils) were attracted by the fake pathogens I introduced them! Like little amoebas, they crawled up to foreign organisms before eating and digesting them, a process called phagocytosis. This way, the danger is neutralized and won’t be able to hurt you! The role of your immune system is to protect you against a wide array of pathogens like viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites like worms or protozoa. It seems pretty straightforward like this but it’s a bit more complicated than this! There are two different types of immune responses against invading microbes: the innate response and the adaptative response. They both work together to eliminate a threat but are very different responses. In this video, you can observe the innate response, also called natural response, in action! This response is the body’s first line of defense against pathogen and is rapid and non-specific. This means it can recognize a wide range of pathogens that share common features and uses phagocytic cells like neutrophils and macrophages to destroy them. If you get bitten by an insect, macrophages and neutrophils will run at the crime scene and neutralize toxins or pathogens, if some got in. If there’s an infection and pathogens couldn’t be destroyed by macrophages and neutrophils, lymphocytes come along to the party!" 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #Microscopicworld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #Microworld
