Designed to merge biology with urban technology, such systems point toward a future in which city infrastructure could do more than illuminate streets. It could also help process carbon dioxide and support cleaner urban environments.
While this vision is compelling, it is still better described as an emerging concept than a citywide reality in Paris. French innovators such as Glowee have developed bioluminescent lighting systems, and French biochemist Pierre Calleja has presented algae-based lamp prototypes that explore how living organisms might contribute to lighting and carbon capture. Researchers have also continued to study photobioreactors as part of sustainable urban design.
