KAHere are 3 HARD TRUTHS I needed to hear to grow as an artist:
1.) you’ve mistaken movement for progress
First off, in the last decade I’ve not only been rapping and putting out music, but building a brand and printing and designing merch, filming videos and learning to edit them.
Though I was learning skills that are useful to everything that surrounds the music, the music was put on a back burner.
It felt like I was playing the long game but never actually starting the race.
Realizing that horizontal movement isn’t the same as forward progress and internalizing that has been HUGE for me.
2.) you’re more afraid of success than failure
This one took less than 1 second to sink in when I heard it because it leaves you so vulnerable. I know what failure feels like. The moment that something works, along comes all the res expectations and responsibilities that go with it
Am I ready for that?
What if people start expecting more?
What if I become a symbol for something greater?
Will it change who I am?
3.) you’re hiding behind your potential
“Potential” is safe. If I decide to fully commit and fall short, that’s real.
but if I keep my output just below the threshold of judgement it still keeps me in a comfort zone.
One of the most important things I’ve heard recently came from a conversation about this and that was:
“Start shipping at the level you want to be judged at or stop pretending you want to be great”
