LIMy goal here is to be honest with you guys. So here goes.
Honestly it’s hard for Peking duck not to be delicious. The duck here was average, but this experience showed me how much hype social media can create.
This place definitely has history, charm, and a cool story behind it. But in a city like Beijing, where there are sooo many incredible roast duck restaurants- I don’t think this one lives up to the hype or the price point.
Unfortunately my experience with the service was disappointing. Even though I speak Mandarin, the staff were rude and not very accommodating.
The only standout for me was the fried duck leftovers that they bring to the table after carving the duck — that was genuinely good.
Beijing has so many amazing places for roast duck, so for me this wouldn’t be a spot I’d come back.

NISkip the tourist traps and long queues. When I asked locals where to eat Peking duck, they kept saying Li Qun Roast Duck 🦆. I hadn’t even seen it online, but the locals’ recommendation made it impossible to ignore.
Tucked in the hutong alleyways 🏮, the entrance looks tiny, like you’re walking into someone’s home. Inside, a roaring oven full of ducks greets you 🔥. Simple, unpretentious, authentic, and legendary. Even Anthony Bourdain ate here 👀.
No fancy waiters. No frills. Just incredible food 🍴. We went at 11am on a Tuesday - no queue, first in. By far the best meal we had in China.

ZAI’m a little obsessed with trying iconic dishes from the ages that haven’t really changed much.
From centuries old Mughal curries to Japanese soba noodles, tasting your way through a time slip is one of the greatest things about travel.
Peking duck has been feeding emperors since the 5th century, over 1,500 years of history on a single plate. It travelled from the imperial kitchens of Nanjing to become Beijing’s most iconic dish.
The duck arrives crispy and paper thin, dipped in hoisin sauce and then wrapped in a thin pancake with spring onion and cucumber. So simple yet a bite and you understand why Beijing has been obsessed with this simple combination for centuries.

SUMy favorite meal in Beijing this time was at @chef1996restaurant (1996 川菜·主厨餐厅) - a contemporary Sichuan restaurant! The restaurant is helmed by owner-chef @dee.l.chef who started the successful chain restaurant Meizhou Dongpo 眉州东坡 with her husband 30 years ago. To commemorate her founding spirit and mission to honor Sichuan’s culinary culture, Chef Dee opened Chef 1996 in the original space of her first restaurant in order to present the perfect Sichuan dining experience. Embodying the philosophy 一菜一格，百菜百味 “one dish one style; a hundred dishes, a hundred flavors”, the dishes here are elegant and exquisite with a great balance of flavors. One of the signature dishes is the ingenious Crispy Tea Smoked Duck 酥皮樟茶鸭 which combines the best of Peking duck and tea smoked duck into one. Another creation that is not to be missed is the Cured Meat Banquet 腊珍宴which is available only during the winter time. Using different types of wood to smoke different cuts of meat, the cured meat here is unlike anything I’ve had before. Chef 1996 is definitely worth trying when in Beijing.
