At the Stretch & Bobbito’s 20th Anniversary Reunion Concert in 2011, Raekwon performed his “C.R.E.A.M.” verse over the instrumental from Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Pt. II.” The moment stood out because it brought together two of the most recognizable New York rap records from the 1990s in one live performance.
“C.R.E.A.M.” was released in 1993 on Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the “Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”, while “Shook Ones Pt. II” followed in 1995 on Mobb Deep’s “The Infamous”. Both records became major reference points for East Coast rap, which is why hearing Raekwon’s verse over that beat lands so hard.
What makes the blend work is that both songs come from the same era of New York rap, but with very different production styles.
