16Full review of the Chromatic @modretro sent me this of their new portable gaming system, a handheld that plays Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Chromatic game carts.
TL;DR This is the definitive modern-day Gameboy Color experience. It’s a bit pricey at $200, but if you love the original Gameboy / Gameboy Color, and are looking for a backlit version, this is the way to go.
Screen: The screen on this bad boy is crystal clear. Gameboy games have never looked better. My phone camera isn’t great, so it Mario look likes it’s a bit blurry, but that’s my camera, not the Chromatic. The adjustable brightness is a really nice feature, and this looks greats playing in the dark.
Controls: The Chromatic absolutely SHINES. The dpad is incredible, and the buttons are super clicky. I really enjoyed playing games on this.
Design/Ergonomics: The unit is very comfortable to hold. It’s almost a 1:1 match with an original Gameboy Color. It’s a slight bit bulkier, because it holds 3 AA batteries, and the shell on this is a metal alloy, not plastic, so it’s slightly heavier.
Sound: My camera picked up the sound pretty faithfully. It sounds great.
Overall: This thing is a gem. I’d been looking into a backlit GBC, so I love the option of getting one from a company vs a random dude on eBay 😂 This is a fantastic option if you want to fall in love with your Gameboy Collection all over again. I give it a 9.5/10.
The unit is expensive at $199 (comes with Tetris). It would’ve been nice to get a rechargeable battery pack at this price, but that’s my only gripe. This plays original Gameboy and Gameboy Color carts, not Gameboy Advance.
I think anyone would naturally compare this to the Analogue Pocket. Having both, I can tell you: The screens are both wonderful, the Chromatic is built sturdier (metal casing), carts feel much more secure, and is slightly cheaper. The Analogue can play GB, GBC, and GBA carts right out of the box, and offers more customization capabilities, and save states. If you’re looking for a modern day Gameboy Color, the Chromatic the choice. If you’re looking for more than that, go Analgoue.

For me it would be that you didn't require the internet or a monthly subscription to access it 😅
Recently I've been transported to a simpler time thanks to the Chromatic console from Mod Retro which has unlocked a lot of core memories.
It plays all of your old Game Boy Color cartridges which means it's time to dust off that copy of Pokemon Red 😉
They've also made their own modern Game Boy style games which is sick to see.
Shall I do a more detailed review?

THI modded my @modretro Chromatic. The best thing about the Chromatic is that it was made with modders in mind, and even though this wasn't a big change, it did make my Chromatic buttons look way better from the stock ones. I also added the Chromatic power pack so no more batteries!
